just out of interest, i'd be interested to know at this age, does milk and then breakfast a bit later work best, or the other way round?? ds seems to not be that keen on breakfast after having milk first, even if its nearly 2 hours later. have tried to give him just a few oz's milk first thing, then breakfast, but after that he refuses rest of milk. just curious.

I always do milk first then breakfast later on. Did it with DD1 and am doing it again with DD2. As they get older you can do it the other way round if you want, but at 10 months its important to keep the amount of milk up.

Agree with Yorkiegirl

dd has her sneaky breakfast milk at 6 ish- before I'm properly awake and realising the time- then I give her breakfast between 7.30 and 8 and she's not a fantastic food eater then. This is made worse by the restrictive no dairy diet that we're on as I can only give her banana or soya yoghurt. BUT she's happy and healthy so I'm happy that she's getting her nutrients from the bm

DD was never great at breakfast so I gave her cereal first and then milk, she is now 3 and still has it this way around. DS (8 months) has 4oz milk and then the rest in his cereal which takes it up to about 7oz. I don't think either of them will have a decent breakfast if they fill up on loads of milk first.

I'm still bfing my 10mth old - only one bf a day now and it's on waking - he tends to either doze off again if it's v early (6ish), or if he sleeps until 7, then he feeds and we get up. He usually has his breakfast an hour or so later depending on how late we're running for school for the other two! Sometimes he only gets breakfast when we get back around 9am.

DS likes his milk first thing then about an hour or so later we do breakfast.

Agree with Yorkiegirl. Also we have milk in bed so you get extra time relaxing. Do breakfast later.

Hi pixiefish - why not give her soya milk on cereal? Sorry if this sounds really ignorant - By the time ds was eating food he was having formula - dd at 6 months is BF so am just exploring feeding food and bf!!!! Would putting on cereal mean too much milk? (ds has soya milk btw so do i think its yum!)

pixiefish · 10/12/2004 20:32

before we went dairy free she wasn't that keen on cereal. not keen on too much soya for her either TBH

JennisaurusUnderTheMistletoe · 10/12/2004 21:08

We have always done milk first.

Distracted · 10/12/2004 21:20

Dd would eat more breakfast if we did breakfast before milk, so probably best that way around (milk first would impact on breakfast, but breakfast first doesn't impact on her milk intake).

Having said that, we haven't kept it up. Like winterwarmmummer says - giving milk first buys you extra time in bed in the morning. Means she can drink her milk while we're getting up or at weekends while we read books with her in our bed. Also have new baby now too and he needs his milk 1st thing, so she likes to drink hers at the same time (couldn't feed her breakfast while giving him his milk). She doesn't always eat breakfast though.

Always did milk first and then breakfast. When DS was that age he used to wake early (sometime between 5.30 and 6.30 generally) so would give him milk then. He would have breakfast at about 8 when he got to nursery, so on the other days I stuck to that time. Looks like panning out the same with DD.
