they are cheaper in Morrison's - significantly cheaper. Are they kept in worse conditions or is it just cheaper to do things in Holland?

Hi Colditz, JHH calling from Holland here... I don't know the exact answer to your question, but: there's much more in the news at the moment about free range chicken/eggs in the UK than there is on the news here in NL. This could mean that the UK is more advanced in these matters... or that NL is and no-one makes a fuss about it anymore. But: a friend of mine had to sell up her chicken farm last year because of all the new EU regulations.

er still not helping, I know...

However. I cannot IMAGINE that it's cheaper to crate eggs laid in the same conditions all the way over from Holland than it is to transport them (from the same conditions) across the UK. I would go with the UK ones - prob less transport involved. Unless you live on the SE coast and they don't go to some warehouse in Edinburgh first of course

Thanks janeHH, that's really interesting.

I would be surprised if it was cheaper to raise them in Holland - isn't it quite an expensive country generally?

JaneHH · 15/02/2008 15:22

No Holland's not that expensive, really. Nothing like Sweden, eg! Or Japan for that matter. Though having said I've never compared cannabis prices in London

gingerninja · 15/02/2008 15:30

I may be completley wrong but I'm told that Danish pigs are kept in sow stalls (legal in Euope)which are banned in the UK so it could well be that in Holland chickens are kept to a European standard that is more intensive than the UK. But that is pure speculation

JaneHH · 15/02/2008 15:36

Ginger you could be very right - to be honest I'm only speculating with my limited knowledge too!

the UK is in Europe!!! I think you mean "on the continent"

But er there must be websites with this kind of information based on fact rather than our speculation? Anyone know where Colditz can go and look?

gingerninja · 15/02/2008 15:39

thanks Jane but we all know that us Brits don't like to think of ourselves as Euopeans actually I was really refering to European Union legal standards being 'over ruled' by British Law and standards.

JaneHH · 15/02/2008 15:46

sorry ginger, only messing I knew what you meant.

Until the BBC stops saying "in Europe" when they mean "on the continent" then I'm fighting a losing battle I'm off to Pedants Corner, me....

oh and before you think I really DO smoke cannabis, the answer is no I don't and never would... only tourists and drop-outs smoke it over here

JaneHH · 15/02/2008 15:47

as you were, back to those chickens and eggs...
