Valentine biscuits

Am trying to make some valentine biscuits. Hoping to do just plain biscuit cut in heart shape with red icing on top. Seems very simple. I dont bake so followed recipe from cookery book but forgot the blinking sugar. Went to re do it and have run out of butter. Used margarine instead and have bunged it in fridge to set but its very gooey. Was the margarine a huge mistake?? DO I hvabe to run off and buy butter?
Also, what sort of icing is best on top? As you can tell, dont do this often!!!!
TIA.

Marge should be fine, but butter is better. Icing just normal icing sugar and water. Steady and slowly putting the water in (which has to be hot (usually from the kettle)) and sieve the icing sugar.

Marge is fine to make biscuits with as long as it says you can use it for baking on the side of the tub.

If it's really gooey I would say stuff the recipe and add more flour and a bit more sugar or you'll have nasty greasy yellow biscuits. Just add in more flour until the dough is stiffer and you can cut it into shapes. Vanilla extract/essence adds a nice flavour, too.

Writing icing is great for biscuits, you could write valentines messages on there, but if you want to make your own, just use the tiniest bit of water with a lot of sieved icing sugar, and add a very small drop of red food colouring. It goes a long way o you can always add more. Mix until quite thick and glossy, and spoon on top of the cooled biscuits.

Thank you so much guys, thats great. Icing sounds simple enough (famous last words). I do have writing icing so think might give messages a go. Keep fingers crossed for the biscuits, am off to add more flour as def looking too gloopy!!

How did your biccies turn out?

Winston · 15/02/2008 13:45

Not great fup1981. Burnt majority whilst attending to war between two DD's. Salvaged about 6 so iced them (icing turned out ok) and binned the rest. Gutted but not put off. Its my mission to get these basic baking tasks sorted so am going to try again at the weekend. Thanks for asking.

PS! Margarine didnt work (was not supposed to be used for baking it seems) so did end up buying more butter! By next year I WILL be better!
