Your favourite Greek (or Greek style yogurt)

WildFlowerBees · 22/03/2023 18:53

I used to have Fage 0% but I find it too sour so tried Yeo Valley Greek style which is better more creamy. But I'm still on the hunt for the best creamy yogurt full of good bacteria not really full fat as I dislike the taste but without that tangy aftertaste.

I add honey to mine but I'd love to be able to eat it straight.

Any recommendations?

ive arrived at this thread after unsuccessfully using Aldi skyr to make yogurt, just wondering if anyone else has had any luck using any Aldi yogurts to make it?

bruffin · 04/07/2023 11:40

@Poppyloon Skyr is not the same as yoghurt. Its made with rennet like cheese so whst have the right bacteria to make yoghurt.

IncomingTraffic · 04/07/2023 11:48

I like the more expensive pots often labelled ‘Authentic’ green yoghurt in Sainsbury’s and M&S. they’re thicker than the normal stuff. Get the 10% fat version.

The Mevgal 10% ‘authentic’ green yoghurt from Amazon fresh is also really good.

Old thread but you may not have found it yet. Asda extra special (full fat) is amazing although pricey for a smallish pot

"doesnt"

Poppyloon · 04/07/2023 12:56

I don’t think you’re right, I have made yogurt with genuine skyr, it’s called a cheese because it’s strained but it’s cultured not made with rennet. But thanks for your input

This is one of my favourites too along with Aldi and Lidl

Brefugee · 04/07/2023 13:19

I make my own. It is full fat and a bit tangy because that's how i like it. I eat it every day for breakfast and make 3-4 litres a week depending on what else i use it for and if DH eats it too

Doggydarling · 04/07/2023 13:31

I like the aldi version but will be trying lidl's after reading the posts. To the poster who mentioned kefir please be aware that a lot of the commercially produced kefir isn't cultured in the traditional way using 'grains', it's more like a thin yogurt with probiotics added before bottling. I make my own kefir at home, it's incredible simple and I can make it as strong as I want and then strain to remove whey if I want a thicker consistency to use like sour cream etc, I add it to fruit in smoothies, drink it straight, there are so many uses. I have some daily and so do my dogs who absolutely love it. The 'grains' are usually shared around by people who make it.

Total 2%. High protein content and less bitter than 0%.

if its yoghurt its live
unless its some long life nonsense, the yoghurt is live and will have beneficial bacteria

I have taken this up with both Aldi and Lidl. They have confirmed that NONE of their yoghurt is live. It is pasteurised “for a consistent product”. Therefore, I no longer buy it. Why would you?

None of Aldi or Lidl yoghurts are live. I have this direct from customer support.

Brefugee · 04/07/2023 13:47

i buy Aldi (in Germany so prob different) organic yoghurt sometimes if i have been away and haven't been making yoghurt, for example. It's definitely live.
The only thing you have to watch out for then is not getting a low fat one and mixing it with full fat milk, you don't get good results making yoghurt like that.

But if you can get yoghurt culture (widely available and different types too) and you have a litre of milk (and even UHT milk is good for this, better in fact as it's cheaper and you don't need to boil it if you don't want) and a big jar - you can easily make your own.

Waitrose 1 10%

Poppyloon · 04/07/2023 17:17

Yeah I make my own yogurt a lot but this Aldi Skyr didn’t do anything. I’ve finally got a yogurt maker and it was my first time using it and it didn’t work, hence asking if it’s the Aldi yogurt. I suspect they pasteurise after culturing it as I now have another one on that is working. Interesting though, I have had no issue with low fat to full fat, this was my first failure 😞

Poppyloon · 04/07/2023 17:55

as I understand it, I isn’t always made with rennet, make kefir and you’ll make cheese, it eventually splits into curds and whey.

I meant the Skyr by Arla doesn’t contain rennet just cultures,
https://www.arlafoods.co.uk/brands/arla-skyr/what-is-skyr/ as the genuine one as this is the label that the Aldi one seems to be trying to copy - here in the UK. I make my own kefir from grains, and then made cheese from cow, goat and cake lol.
likewise for the cheese made from kefir, just cultured, no rennet needed 😀it’s fab too! The goats one was particularly tasty

bruffin · 04/07/2023 21:17

to be fair though Arla skyr is fake anyway.
When DS came home from Iceland he was raving how nice skyr was, so when a few months later Arla launched "skyr" in the UK he was disappointed how it tasted nothing like Icelandic skyr. Proper Skyr is classified as a cheese not a yoghurt

Doingthework · 04/07/2023 21:32

Hi op I’ve only read your replies so sorry if this has been mentioned above. My absolute favourite it Olympus Greek youghurt from Costco haven’t found one as good.

CosyCoffee · 04/07/2023 21:33

Yeah, the Aldi 10% fat one is banging.
