Hi,
These days DS (8mths)is determined to try whatever we are eating.Last week, could not stop him from sucking on satsuma segments. He positively loves it!!
He has a cold so I give him satsuma juice diluted in water.
However I just read that they should not have citrus fruit B4 12mths.
Why???? Do you give your babies orange juice???
thx

slim22 - Not to give my baby orange juice (diluted) have never occurred to me until I gave it to her and she was sick. The nursery were horrified when I told them Sad Curdles the milk in their stomach, apparently.
If she hadn't been sick though I would have continued.

I didn't give them citrus before 12 months. Apparantly they can be allergic.

But if he has already had it without any problems, then I wouldn't worry about it.

I wouldn't worry about it curdling the milk in the baby's stomach -- I should think stomach acid does a perfectly fine job of that without any help from oranges! Some people say it's allergenic, some people say it's too acidic (I've seen a couple people with babies who get more diaper rash after citrus). We've been letting DD chew on the lemon slices out of our water glasses every now and then since she was about 6.5 months, and now that she's 9 months I let her have a whole orange slice, or a skinned orange segment (if you give her the whole segment she chokes on it, it has to be skinned) but no more than 1 a day, to try to keep down the acid level in her diapers.

used to give ds Kiwi fruit at 6 months and he loved it...as long as it doesn't go straight through your ds and he doesn't get an uncomfortable tummy because of this I would give him whatever he enjoys...in moderation and perhaps a little of the juice mixed in with rice pudding to get him gradually used to it maybe.

Hello again,
Thanx for quick replies.
He has not shown any sign of allergy/collic/rash, so I guess OK to continue (in moderation) since he is so enthousiastic.
thanx for tips.
PS: what other juice do you recommend?

any friut juice, remember that from about 9 months they can virtually have most fruit and veg (but not honey till 12 months)...strawberries, apple juice, any juice think.

Apple juice is good. Pineapple (but tends to be sweet). If you are giving them juice, water it down quite a lot. The recommendation is one part juice to 5 parts water but I never watered it down that much. Even now, my 21 month old has one part juice, one part water. Too much juice can give them diarhhoea I am reliably informed (by a paediatician)

diarrhoea.
