Vegetarian option help!!

hayls89 · 23/01/2023 15:25

Hi all

Planning a surprise wedding anniversary party and have to choose the menu.

A few of the guests are vegetarian so I'm struggling with the options for starters.
Which one would you pick?

A. Caramelised onion tart cucumber & radish salad

B. Smoked aubergine served with flatbread, pomegranate soy yogurt, sesame seeds & garden mint salad

C. Twice baked cheese and spinach soufflé

Trying to keep it classy but also please everyone & none of the 3 options jump at me. It's not an option to let the guests choose as it has to be picked before the day and all have to have the same plate of food.
Please help 😂
Tia x

A fair number of my meals are vegan - but I don't like dairy substitutes or fake meat. Honourable exception for oat milk/cream. The main sounds nice and is vegan

kateandme · 24/01/2023 14:00

In my experience lots of people hate the texture of aubergine. It's a very marmite veg.
The souffle I think is special.peopke fobt usually cpok them at home and are a special occasion dish.but the tart sound really nice too.
Agree on the lumped together vegan vegetarian stuff.stop it!

Eyeofthestorm7 · 24/01/2023 14:05

C sounds most special. A lovely event to organise.

Really? I don't know anyone who won't eat aubergine. It's tomato, especially raw tomato that is the most marmite vegetable (yes I know it's technically a fruit) in my experience

Squamata · 24/01/2023 14:10

Do you know more about the veggie people? Massive generalisation but older might prefer cheesy things, younger the smoky vegan stuff.

comfyshoes2022 · 24/01/2023 14:11

My preference would be A C B.

@Overthebow alot of meat eaters and vegetarians I know love vegan food and vegan cheese.
Especially when someone who is a good cook prepares it.
Cheese made from a cow's breast milk is disgusting

Lol

1 out of 10 for credibility

Stickytreacle · 24/01/2023 14:20

ABC for me!

Hollyhocksauce · 24/01/2023 14:22

Not C as no good for vegans or dairy intolerance.

B would be my first choice as a cosmopolitan veggie, but if you're somewhere with quite traditional/conservative food tastes then I'd play it safe and go with A first.

JulesJules · 24/01/2023 14:23

I often eat food that is vegan - but I don't want to eat it all the time, and I especially don't want to not have any choice but a vegan option when I go out for a meal, because the restaurant has just lumped vegetarians in with vegans as it's easy and they cba. It's not very long ago that vegetarians were lucky to even get one option on a menu, now often that option is vegan.

Yep
Still waiting after 40years for restaurants to give a toss about us vegetarians

Anonymouslyposting · 24/01/2023 14:33

100% B

Then C, then A.

HallieHufflepuff · 24/01/2023 14:34

@ouch321 Just because you're prejudice, doesn't mean everyone else is.

I am a credible source. I host (and cook/bake) at least once a month and often bake for friends and family (who are not vegan). Sometimes as gifts and sometimes I get paid to bake. I only prepare vegan food.

Noone has complained and people keep coming back to pay me for my baking.
Strange thing to do if they hate vegan food.

ohdizzy · 24/01/2023 17:20

I'd go for the onion tart.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/01/2023 17:57

@HallieHufflepuff What your guests say has no bearing here though. It's just a load of people saying their preferences out of a choice. And many people choose to eat cheese. Personally, I've never met a vegan cheese that wasn't pretty disgusting. And, as a vegetarian, I resent the fact that often that choice is taken away from me by venues (not in this case) choosing to try to make a single dish that ticks the veggie/vegan/gluten and nut free option all at once, whilst meat eaters still get lots of choice.

HallieHufflepuff · 24/01/2023 18:34

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie That's strange, what brands have you tried ?
There's so many great brands and the odd one that isn't great.

I agree that meat eaters shouldn't be treated better and have more choice than others.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/01/2023 18:41

What brands would you recommend? The ones I've had have generally just tasted of oil or felt a bit soapy texture-wise, and melt strangely.

RhubarbFairy · 24/01/2023 18:44

A, B, C for me (vegetarian).

I like the sound of the soufflé the least, and I'm a sucker for a tart. Though it would be better with goat cheese, because goat cheese and caramelised onion tart is amazing.

but they gave you stuffed mushrooms!

everyone i no hates their slimy texture and bitter taste.

AdaColeman · 25/01/2023 00:55

I'd say the caramelised onion tart with the salad would have the widest appeal. The aubergine dish would be at the bottom of my list, as not everyone is keen on spicy Middle Eastern flavours.

Cascais · 25/01/2023 01:12

A

With Parmesan 🤣🤣🤣🤣

JarByTheDoor · 25/01/2023 02:21

Vaguely amused by all the vegetarians complaining about sometimes only being offered vegan options, after decades of hearing a subset of earnest veggies telling omnis, "Nobody needs meat, surely you can handle one meal without it?" and patiently explaining that both omnivores and vegetarians can eat veggie food. I'm sure these are two separate groups of vegetarians, of course.

sashh · 25/01/2023 02:52

feelingrubbish2023 · 23/01/2023 15:44

I'd love B, A sounds ok but is the standard fare at weddings etc and then I'd try and eat C politely but I really don't like soufflé

You have saved me typing.

Not vegi but I do eat quite a lot of aubergine.
