Does anyone still think vegetarians just eat nut cutlets and pasta?

As a previous card-carrying carnivore and recent convert to the joys of a meat-free diet, I am STAGGERED at the amount of choice out there.
The high point of my surprise and delight had to be when I discovered that you could have a full English cooked breakfast (with the all-important bacon and sausage components) without any compromise on taste.
I'm one of those vegetarians that like there to be a "meat-like" element to the meal and I dont miss meat at all.

I just wondered if anyone still thought that veggie meant boring and bland. Am NOT trying to convert anyone, just preach to the curious!

I cook a lot with quorn mince/pieces as I find they taste good and aren't as fatty as the beef alternative

AdamAnt · 01/02/2008 15:05

But veggie bacon is durrrty. It's like rehydrated frazzles. This doesn't stop me eating it with a fried egg in a sandwich. I just have to go and say a few hail Mary's and self-flagellate for a while afterwards.

suzywong · 01/02/2008 15:14

yes, if they have the energy

2sugars · 01/02/2008 15:15

No, but from what I can see loads of people think vegetarians eat fish, including some 'vegetarians' I know!

FenellaFudge · 01/02/2008 15:15

No, I aware that they also eat Nettles and dust.

AdamAnt · 01/02/2008 15:30

2sugars - I'm one of them. The reason is that it's tedious to say to all the dumb fucks out there "I don't eat meat...no I don't eat lamb...or chicken..no not even turkey, that's meat as well" etc Plus I'm choosy about my fish - no farmed crap. So it's easier to just say I'm vegetarian.

Fenella - lol

I thought they ate nut cutlets, pasta and lentils.

DiamandaGalas · 01/02/2008 15:37

in principle "true vegetarians" do not eat any products aimed to resemble meat/fish either by look/taste to any animal.

AdamAnt · 01/02/2008 15:44

DG - says who??

2sugars · 01/02/2008 15:44

I can see your point AA. Is 'I don't eat meat or fowl' lost one them?

NomDePlume · 01/02/2008 15:47

what are nut cultlets, anyway ?

I love meat. Sorry.

AdamAnt · 01/02/2008 15:52

2sugars - TBH it usually only comes up in the context of someone offering to cook something for me, and when you factor in the no-farmed fish stuff, it's just becomes a palaver and makes me sound even fussier than a straightforward vegetarian. Plus people then tend to assume you want to eat fish all the time.

scatterbrain · 01/02/2008 16:04

My mother-in-law is a vegetarian who eats beef, lamb, chicken, fish, sausages of dubious origin etc - and fails to understand why we get fed up when she insists we cook her a separate thing - and then she nicks a bit of meat !! Grrrrr !!

NoBiggy · 01/02/2008 16:13

scatterbrain, your mil is a control freak, not a vegetarian (subtle distinction).

FenellaFudge · 01/02/2008 16:14

and Blu-Tac.

NoBiggy · 01/02/2008 16:16

pgandsad, yes there is oodles of stuff, but we still have rice and lentils a few times a week, just because it's our favourite.

Mercy · 01/02/2008 16:20

My dh is a vegetarian (although started eating fish a year or so ago).

I'm afraid I do think vegetarian food can be bland and boring (especially when eating out).

You should try indian food. Not bland.
And also lebanese/turkish/greek restaurants. They offer varied yummy veggie options. Give me falafel over quorn any day.

I can't stand those mock foods we use as substitutes in our standard western diets. Don't understand why one would use soy protein to make "bolognese" when you can use lentils for instance.
