Would you say lemonade was as bad as coke?

Just been having a dispute/discussion with a friend who thinks they are both equally awful, but i've always considered lemonade the lesser of two evils .

the lemonade here usually has artificial sweetners, which are vile. regular coke doesn't.

beansprout · 20/01/2008 21:00

Sugar wise probably quite similar but coke has caffeine so....

Peachy · 20/01/2008 21:01

No, but that depends on what you consider 'bad'

its good fro me because its one of the few drinks I can tolerate (PG and still rather sicky on fluids at 30 weeks) and its good for ds1 as its caffeine free and he doesn't drink enough

but its not pure mountain spring

pagwatch · 20/01/2008 21:02

No. I don't think it is.
My ASD son can tolerate sprite as an occassional treat. whilst it is still shit it doesn't have half the crap that coke does.
He reacts very quickly to additives and stuff and coke would make himoopy in no time at all. It had such a hideous effect on him that it was one of the few foods that he chose to exclude because it made him feel so awful.

cornsilk · 20/01/2008 21:02

I only buy lemonade that doesn't contain aspartme. Sprite and 7up don't. All the own brands do. Coke has an effect on my chn's behaviour, so I try to avoid it.

TotalChaos · 20/01/2008 21:03

would have thought lemonade was slightly better as doesn't have caffeinne in.

PavlovtheCat · 20/01/2008 21:03

No. If you drop a penny in lemonade it does not come out shiny and clean...

nannyL · 20/01/2008 21:04

depends on the lemonade

traditional lemonade (like PROPER traditional lemonade) basically lemon juice, fizzy water and sugar IMO is fine

also full sugar lemonade that doesnt have artifical sweeteners isnt that bad. (waitrose do one) where as now adays even most full sugar lemonades do still have cheaper artificial sweetners as well

FrannyandZooey · 20/01/2008 21:04

no, a simple lemonade like sprite or 7 up as mentioned earlier only has about 3 or 4 ingredients in : water, sugar, flavouring

MeMySonAndI · 20/01/2008 21:05

Havignto avoid both due to DS allergies, I have realised that they are equally unnecessary and equally easy to avoid. I just don't see the point of stuffing DS with highly sugared/aspartamed water when he is happy with juice or water.

pagwatch · 20/01/2008 21:05

sprite does not have artificial sweeteners unless you buy the diet version.

MorocconOil · 20/01/2008 21:07

From personal experience coke makes my DSs behave completely manically, whereas lemonade makes them excitable.

poppy34 · 20/01/2008 21:08

coke is also quite acidic (why its meant to be a good thing to drink if you're anywhere you're worried about getting a tummy bug) - my dad was also vehemently anti my sister or I having it until we were about 12.

Agree with the other posters re looking out for artificial sweeteners in it.

Hulababy · 20/01/2008 21:08

I wouldn't gine DD coke because of the caffine.

pagwatch · 20/01/2008 21:10

My son drinks water 99% of the time but as an occasional treat , especially when he is out with other children who are drinking it, it is actually very difficult to refuse him. And sugar isn't great but one sugar laden sprite every three or four weeks is not going to damage him extensively.
Poor little bugger gets dragged to MacDonalds as thats where some of the other parents want to have their kids parties in school time. They sit there with burgers chips and cokes while he has rice cakes and a dairy free pudding.
I think if he couldn't have a bleedin sprite he might as well shoot himself !

geordiemacminx · 20/01/2008 21:26

Not as easy to snort

sandyballs · 20/01/2008 22:08

Wow, loads of replies. Thanks, the general consensus is no, not as bad, as i thought

sprite was one of the products singled out recently for particular criticism in research into food in uk containing ingredients banned elsewhere. sprite and skittles are the two i particularly remember! it's fizzy water round here for a treat

onebatmother · 20/01/2008 22:16

I'm with Geordie. Cocaine makes kids mental, ime.

shrooms · 20/01/2008 22:36

Cola contains phosphates which if ingested often will prevent calcium from being deposited in the bones as well, lad to bone thinning. Scary. So for that reason, lemonade is 'better' but fizzy drinks... sheesh.

mylovelymonster · 20/01/2008 22:45

I think the shiny penny thing with coke is phosphoric acid - so I would say coke is worse than lemonade for this and the caffeine, but both sugar laden. Everything fine in moderation though. Best drink is water - and fizzy stuff a now and again treat. When I was little, it was dandelion & burpdock or cream soda......mmmmm
