my 5-a-day - how about you?

I just worked out that I had;
1 apple and orange juice at breakfast
1 apple and raisins with lunch (sunflower seeds and nuts)
and tea tonight is home-made parsnip soup followed by an orange. Given that the gov. say that 2 apples is still only 1 of your 5-a-day, and juice is only 1 as well, no matter how much you drink, how come even tho all I eat is fruit and veg, I am still under the 5????

just tell me how you make your parsnip soup please?

Well, you're doing better than me today! (and probably lots of ohter people too actually)

It's variety as well as quantity that's important - apparently. And also we should be eating a minimum of 5 f&v per day plus I think you should add it up over the course of a week rather than just on a daily basis (that's what I tend to do anyway).

I struggle with it even being a vegetarian. trying to get 5 a day plus the required amount of complex carbs plus protein! My tummy isn't that big!
Todays I've had 2 bananas, a large bunch of grapes, 1 satsuma, portion of rocker salad and some grated carrot. Am stuffed and its not even tea-time.

Parsnip soup -

1 onion
however many parsnips you have (I used 3 big ones, but it's all for me!)
chop and fry off in a bit of oil, add stock to cover, simmer until soft. I add a bit of currypowder but it's optional...
then whizz til smooth, add a bit of milk (about half a pint) and a bit of cream if you have some, and heat. And eat.
yum.

Actually if I count the onion I'm over the 5-a-day!

I've decided that I'm going the japanese way - they don't have 'portions' so much, as eating lots of different things over a day, i.e. a bit of seaweed, a bit of avocado, a bit of salad, a few leaves, a piece of carrot etc. That way they get lots of different nutrients, rather than having to eat 1 ounce of apple/grapes/peas whatever. In the same way I'd rather drink a smoothie made with 5 different fruits than the same amount of apple juice. It's got to be better for you.

An apple and a banana
A carrot
Plate of spinach, cucumber and tomatoes with my lunch
An orange
Dinner will be bean bolegnaise with broccoli.

Thats about 10 as the sauce also has onions.

FrannyandZooey · 15/01/2008 18:56

come on 10 / 10 if you want to concentrate on eating more portions a day

we aim for 10 and sometimes get there

Karen999 · 15/01/2008 19:00

Cheeseburger with ONIONS (1 portion)
Fries with TOMATO sauce (1 portion)
Flapjacks with RAISINS (1 portion)
Wine=GRAPES (more than one portion)
Fry up with MUSHROOMS (1 portion)

Hey, I am doing quite good....who would have thought this '5 a day' thing could be so easy??
