Hi all,

few questions from me if you could help.

  1. do you know how many kg of foodwaste do you empty every week.

  2. how often do you empty the foodwaste bin to the bigger bin.

  3. do you get the foodwaste bin from the council or do you buy it.

  4. No judgement at all but if you dont do foodwaste seggeragation, then why is that?

Thanks for your help.

Less than a kilo waste but then I’m good at using most things up and chickens get bits and bobs.
Council provides the big bin ( goes in with garden waste) and I have my own counter top tub.

We have two food caddies, provided by our local council. The small one lives in the kitchen by the sink. We buy the (compostable) liners for it. I put a piece of kitchen towel on the base of the caddy to absorb any liquid that seeps out. We put all our compostable waste in there as we go along - coffee grounds, apple cores, banana skins, fruit and vegetable peelings, eggshells, leftover food from plates etc. When the liner bag is full, I tie it up and put it in the big caddy which is outside near the wheelie bins. We normally have at least two liner bags in the big caddy by bin day, sometimes three. That's about as much as it will take. The caddy is emptied every week.

(We also have weekly collections of recyclable waste from the green bin and garden waste from a brown bin we have to pay for. Other waste is collected fortnightly from the black bin.)

We never segregated food waste before our council introduced this system. We don't have a compost bin in the garden. Very small back garden and we don't grow vegetables or fruit, so I don't know what we would do with the compost.

Georgyporky · 07/06/2022 17:32

It must depend on the Council.
We were given an inside & outside bin, plus free bags that we request when needed.
The inside caddy is unsuitable for my kitchen. It needs to be a pedal bin & go in the under-sink cupboard, so we use our existing bin.
Probably 3 half-full bags per week as I don't want a smelly kitchen.

AnnaMagnani · 07/06/2022 17:36

I bought a food waste bin, I know some councils provide one. Ours doesn't but you can put practically all food waste in our green bin including bones.

Love it, probably empty it everyother day and wash it in the dishwasher.

Between that and now being able to drop plastics at Tesco there's barely anything in our grey bin anymore.

Thanks , very helpful. If i can ask , you live alone or with ppl/family. No problem if you dont want to answer. I'm building something hence getting as much real data. Its a major problem we have in the country and world.

when you empty it every week is that so it doesnt smell or coz it gets full.

Assuming half fill bag must be about a kg of waste.

Family of 4 (2 adults, 2 teenagers). Like other posters, I have a small kitchen caddy which gets emptied into the larger food bin outside. Both bins and the compostable bags are provided by the council. Usually two bags full a week, occasionally three.

The council collect the bin every week - assuming you leave it out.
Never weighed a bag, but they're quite small & I would think half of your estimate would be more realistic.

MrsMitford3 · 08/06/2022 17:47

I have a small caddy from amazon that sits on my counter. I use the biodegrable bags in it. It has a replaceable filter which is useful for when it gets smelly.

We have 2 food waste caddies from the council that get emptied every week.
We tend to fill them both pretty much-3 adults now but have been 5 until recently.

When we went to fortnightly bin collections we started with the food waste caddies again-other wise the food sits on our front path for two weeks and we get all sorts of flies and things in the summer-the insert bags were the game changers for me as it seems so much tidier.

I am so glad we tried again as gave up after a particularly mucky incident and do feel better doing it.

woodhill · 08/06/2022 17:49

We have them from the council, have a small waste bin inside emptied daily into another outside food bin which is collected weekly

Esha30 · 11/06/2022 18:21

Thanks everyone. Very helpful.

  1. 0 kg food waste.
  2. don’t have a food waste bin - due to prolific rat problem.
  3. food waste bin would be supplied from the council. - they do two sizes but you only ever seem to get the small one delivered, you have to collect the larger outdoor one.
  4. 0kg food waste.
kittythames · 11/06/2022 18:27

We have them provided by the council, small inside, larger outside.
We get rid of three small bags a week, mainly peelings etc.
We are a family of 4, plus I'm a cm so 3 small children every week day.

I don't think we have much waste but fruit and veg peelings add up.

Pinkflipflop85 · 11/06/2022 18:39

Our council doesn't do separate food waste. It all just goes in the big bin.

picklemewalnuts · 11/06/2022 18:58

My council doesn't do food waste.
I put veg waste in my wormery.
The rest has to go in the normal bin.

My question, from problems I've had at my mum's- how to avoid the caddy becoming damp and slimy inside, around the compostable bag?

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 11/06/2022 19:00

@picklemewalnuts can you line the caddy with a sheet of newspaper? Might help

mcplant · 11/06/2022 19:08

Small caddy indoors with a larger caddy outdoors which hold about 3 bags of the smaller caddy.

We probably fill 3 bags a week. Not much food waste but the peelings, cores, broccoli stems, egg shells, chicken bones, trimmings and tea bags all add up!

5zeds · 11/06/2022 19:09

Ours fills every day (council small) and we have two large ones outside (council large). I put it in the sink and wash it every few days. We stick paper in the bottom under the bag but it rarely gets soggy.

WaltzingToWalsingham · 11/06/2022 19:27

Hi OP. We're a family of two adults and three DC. In answer to your questions:
1 - don't know
2 - every couple of days, on average. It's usually full after two days, but even if it's not full, I don't like to leave it for too long because it starts to smell and attracts flies.
3 - the food waste bins (small indoor caddy and larger outside one) are provided by the council. Round here, you have to provide your own bags/liners, but you can now use any plastic bag or newspaper to line it. I tend to buy the potato starch ones from the supermarket.
4 - N/A

Jijithecat · 11/06/2022 19:37

OP, can I ask what you're doing with the information that you are collecting?

For those lining their caddies with composting bags, you may want to check with the council what technology is used. In our area the equipment can't process the bags so the contents and the bag get separated and the bags just go to waste. As a result we can use plastic bags to line our caddies if we want to. We often use the cereal packet liners as they're pretty good at holding any liquid that comes out.

RoyKentsChestHair · 11/06/2022 19:39

I fill about 2 small (7Litre) bags of food waste a week and it goes into the wheelie bin with garden waste for collection every week.

If you’re interested in composting food waste check out these guys - kompost - they provide on site composting for businesses etc

I put newspaper layers in the bottom and then the compost bag - same in outside bin. Council happy to take newspaper. I do one small bag a week and I put it in the outside bin for collection but with newspapers underneath. Wipe the inside with the newspaper on bottom if a bit damp and job down. I don’t use the council bin as I wanted it under the sink but hanging on the door I brought a under the sink kitchen bin that hangs on the cupboard door. I use the smaller one from the council for dog treats 😂

Dominuse · 11/06/2022 19:44

Job done even

Dutchesss · 11/06/2022 19:49

Our council provide a small caddy and we fill it 2-3 x a week. Not too much waste, but a lot of peel, eggshells and things like that.

merryhouse · 11/06/2022 19:51

We don't live in an area that collects food waste.
