Hi all,

few questions from me if you could help.

  1. do you know how many kg of foodwaste do you empty every week.

  2. how often do you empty the foodwaste bin to the bigger bin.

  3. do you get the foodwaste bin from the council or do you buy it.

  4. No judgement at all but if you dont do foodwaste seggeragation, then why is that?

Thanks for your help.

If you don’t mind asking me, what councils are yours that don’t provide the bin. We are working on a solution with our startup and we will be piloting with three councils before branching out to more. Any info you don’t want to share, no problem at all.

So Gedling Borough and Ashfield District, both in Nottinghamshire, don't do food waste.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 11/06/2022 21:22

We have food waste collection from local council, they provide kitchen caddy and larger outside bin. We put out average of one caddy a week of food waste into council collection - meat scraps, bones, cooked food, egg shells etc. Rest of food waste goes into our home compost bin in garden.

Nsky62 · 11/06/2022 21:27

1 to 2 food bags,I banana skins, egg shells, coffee grinds not much else

  1. Maybe a kilo? It's mostly teabags.
  1. The night before bin day as otherwise the foxes will raid the "foxproof" bins 🙄 I have a purpose-made food bin under the sink and the red Tesco delivery bags fit perfectly. We don't have to use compostible bags, we can use any bags.
  1. Council provides counter-top and outside bins.
  1. N/A.

HTH 🙂

Probably caddy filled twice, varies though. A lot can be if I bring salad in from the garden, waste that if I bought from the supermarket would already be dealt with before it got to me. I don't really get the whole food waste thing as it can be garden food waste or if you buy a whole pineapple or melon rather than the same cut up in plastic or in a tin. All goes out to compost bin (mine, all other bins are council).

RedSnail · 11/06/2022 21:49

We don’t do food waste in my area, everything goes in the black bin

Bluebellbike · 11/06/2022 22:46

I am in Bury, Greater Manchester. I have a small 2.5l food waste caddy in the house and the council provided liners go in the big garden waste bin once full. I request more liners when required. I use about 2 bags per week and live alone. It's mostly teabags, eggshells and fruit/veg peel. had to buy my own kitchen caddy as there wasn't one here when I bought the house. The garden waste bin is emptied every two weeks.

picklemewalnuts · 12/06/2022 08:25

@Esha30 I'd love to know what kind of service you are considering.

My wormery can't keep up with the vegetable and teabag/coffee filter waste from 4 adults.

I need a second one, really. I'm going to have to make one. This afternoon's Jon, perhaps.

AlisonDonut · 12/06/2022 08:31

We are veggie so the concept of food waste doesn't exist as everything goes into the compost bin, tumblers or wormery.

  1. Very little
  2. Don't have a food waste bin
  3. Our council doesn't provide a food waste bin. Any food waste we have just goes into the kitchen bin
  4. Because the only food waste we produce is bones, meat fat or gristle, so it just goes into the kitchen bin

Tea leaves and coffee grounds get sprinkled on the flower beds and vegetable peelings go on the compost heap. There are only two of us most of the time (three when DD is home from university) so I only cook the amount we are going to eat. Any leftovers get frozen or eaten the next day.

chiffchaffchiff · 12/06/2022 15:24

Bedford borough council doesn't do food waste collections. You are not allowed to put it in your green garden waste bin, it has to go in the standard black bin.

Caspianberg · 12/06/2022 15:35

No food waste collected by council

We have two small brabitania waste bins which I think are 1.9l. Bought both. One in kettle cupboard for waste tea leaves and coffee granules, one under sink for fruit/ veg peelings and eggs shells.

We empty every 2-3 days regardless of how full so there’s no smell. We have Three 1mx1m compost bins in our garden they go in

We have very very little other food waste that isn’t composted.

woodhill · 12/06/2022 16:10

I'm surprised the councils aren't under more pressure to provide this services

It really cuts landfill waste

We also try to recycle plastic and cellophane at our local tescos which won't go in main recycling bag

Fulbe · 13/06/2022 23:28

Southampton council doesn't collect food waste. They have some of the worst recycling rates in the country. They burn all the rubbish and have to keep feeding the incinerator.

Fulbe · 13/06/2022 23:30

We put all vegetable waste, egg shells and coffee in our compost bin. About twice per week. Fills a 2litre bowl. Other food waste (e.g. bread, rice) we throw in the bin as we have a rat problem.

LaWench · 13/06/2022 23:54

Family of 4, empty food caddy twice a week. I don't think we hae much food waste. The guinea pigs have all our old fruit and veg.

TheWayoftheLeaf · 14/06/2022 00:00

We put our food waste in a separate bin but then it all goes in with the regular rubbish because we're in flats so have those massive industrial bins out back. The council never gave us a food bin despite asking. One of the flats opposite got one but it's still tiny and not enough for so many flats plus the foxes get in and litter the road every night so a rat problem began.

Central London isn't well suited to food waste segregation.

DuesToTheDirt · 14/06/2022 00:04

do you know how many kg of foodwaste do you empty every week.

  • no, but not much. Mainly avocado skins and eggshells, which don't break down for years in our compost heap. We also add the bits that collect in the bottom of the sink. Occasionally we put in something that's gone off

  • what bigger bin? we just have a small one and use that, and put it in the street once a week

  • from the council. We buy liners though

  • we didn't for a while as we have so little (vegetarians, not much food waste that won't go on our compost heap. But have done it for the past few years now

woodhill · 14/06/2022 18:07

Yes terrible, dd used to bring some recycling home

iklboo · 14/06/2022 18:19

• do you know how many kg of foodwaste do you empty every week.

We've never actually weighed it. I wouldn't say we have a lot of food waste - egg shells, banana peels etc. We don't have a garden so no composting.

• how often do you empty the foodwaste bin to the bigger bin.

Twice a week at the most

• do you get the foodwaste bin from the council or do you buy it.

Provided by the council

SweetPetrichor · 14/06/2022 18:26

We have a small caddy in the kitchen our local council do provide them but it’s not very aesthetically pleasing so when we moved I bought a nicer one. Not that they ever look great…but the council ones are grey and always look grubby!
we empty it a few times a week - I’d guess it totals around 1-2kg per week depending on the types of veg used that week and how many peelings are produced. It gets emptied into the a wheelie bin which is for food waste and garden waste combined. This wheelie bin is emptied by the council once a fortnight.

olympicsrock · 17/06/2022 06:49

We have a food waste bin provided by the council but don’t use it.
reasons are -
space in kitchen for an additional bin.
Hastle of more binliner changes,
smelly as only emptied once a week or more trips to outside bin.

we put ours in with the general rubbish.

Esha30 · 16/03/2023 21:29

Hi all, how are you? We are very close to deploying our foodwaste recycling solution! If you wouldn’t mind, could you pls share . Would you want to see data around how much food you recycled , how much carbon emissions you were able to reduce as well as get benefits such as council tax reduction, some very exclusive offers.

OP posts:
Svara · 16/03/2023 21:39

Council tax reduction? If there is no option just to opt out of food collection already and get a reduction then why would you get one for this? I use my own compost bin so nothing for the council to collect.
