Use by Date on Chicken ..

millie1 · 13/01/2008 13:25

DH bought a chicken in M&S yesterday ... just took it out to come to room temp and it has a use by date of yesterday on it. (Really wish he'd learn to check the dates on things!). Haven't sniffed it, but provided it smells okay, would you use it or not? TIA

I wouldn't, but I'm really funny about dates on things.

Oh, and here's a clip round the ear for your dh

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 13/01/2008 13:26

I wouldn't.

lazarou · 13/01/2008 13:26

I wouldn't but dh would.

BBBee · 13/01/2008 13:27

if it smells okay I would use it but I trust my sense of smell a lot.

millie1 · 13/01/2008 13:27

Oh no ... I really wanted everyone to say they would!! As for DH ... he's on the phone but I shall have words ... he's making a habit of it!

Cross-post BBBee ... shall go and sniff & look for green bits!

but then I'm just cooking it to take the meat off and freeze for sandwiches/wraps for childrens' lunches ... so I shall worry for weeks each time I send it to school with them

I wouldn't and even in date I sniff the bird all over. Just don't trust chicken

BBBee · 13/01/2008 13:36

okay millie, reading between the lines of your post you can't use it - even if it is okay you will worry about it and so it isn't worth it.

Marmite sandwiches are nice.

Twiggypiggy · 13/01/2008 13:36

As well as blaming DH, I would also put a proportion of it onto M & S - their dates on things are really really crap.

lazarou · 13/01/2008 13:39

Yes, M&S do put things out that go out of date the next day. A lot of their bread seems to be like this.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 13/01/2008 14:46

What you should have done was notice yesterday it was use by and stuck it in the freezer before getting it out first thing where it could have defrosted by teatime!

millie1 · 13/01/2008 16:53

M&S in big trouble also ... has happened with a few things recently. I always check dates but men .... .

Would've cooked it yesterday had I known NAB3.... ah well!
