This bag of potatoes I have says best before 5th Jan - can we still eat then?

They seem fine (albeit very slightly soft) but I only want them to top the shepherds pie.

yes, use by dates on things like potatoes are completly random as they can last for ages if stored in cool dark place
If they look + smell okay then use them

Thanks - I knew really but my hubby is completely anal about best before dates and throws away perfectly good stuff...unless I peel the dates off first
