microwave, I came on to argue why it is that some people buy battery hens. To put over the other side of the argument. But I was told that I had a choice and it was implied that I had given up my values and was in the wrong for even considering battery hens.

But yes actually, I am envious of those who can buy free range, organic meat. I'd love to be able to. Anyone jealous of me perchance?

Rhubarb · 09/01/2008 21:57

FAIRTRADE buy FairTrade chickens!

TheIceQueen · 09/01/2008 21:58

oh come on humour me VVV - I'm trying to work out how much more (if it's 9p extra a litre) I'd be paying for my milk if I were to buy organic instead of normal and my maths is just too poor to figure it out

20 pints= ???? litres = ??? more a week???

MicrowaveOnly · 09/01/2008 21:58

err..nutcracker have you not picked up on Rhubarb's rathermartyred tone?

nutcracker · 09/01/2008 21:59

I don't know the answer IQ but I did once look into buying organic milk, after a thread on here about mucus in milk or something, but it proved too costly.

TheIceQueen · 09/01/2008 21:59

Rhubarb - can I join you on the envy of those you can afford to buy free-range too

Sorry Microwaveonly, either I am missing something or you are being incredibly rude to rhubarb for no good reason.

Rhubarb · 09/01/2008 22:02

"Rhubarb's rathermartyred tone"

Sorry, you didn't say that this thread was for narrow minds only. How patronising!
Piss off then.

fordfiesta · 09/01/2008 22:02

ice queen, i just feel that whether you can afford it or not join the campaign.... if you believe it is right. I dont think you need to be eating free range chicken to agree with it (as i said i perfectly understand why people by cheap meat..... i buy cheap shoes that make my feet smell and oh god now i feel bad are probably made in some horrible sweat shop somewhere because that is all i can afford.so i am definately not perfect!) The more people who fight for better conditions for animals (not just chickens) the more eventually will be done and ultimately i do believe the price will come down.... ok maybe not to two for a fiver but better than now at least.

lol nut
Rhubarb thrives on it...I remember her from ooh 5/6 years back - have you been under a different name since Rhubarb?

TheIceQueen · 09/01/2008 22:02

OK let me sum up where I, and I believe also Rhubarb and Nutcracker are.

We think the campaign is fantastic

Free-range DOES taste infinitely better than battery

We would LOVE to support the campaign

We can't AFFORD to support it

We don't LIKE being accused of losing our values or not caring because we can't afford to support it

OK everyone sorted then???

VeniVidiVickiQV · 09/01/2008 22:02

Prices off of sainsbury's to you dont reflect the deals you get in store which DO change from week to week, its true. If Fairtrade is equal to standard I'll get fairtrade every time. It very often is with some fruit and veg in Sainsburys. I also grow some of my own veg in my back garden (noooo it's not a huge garden, I'm afraid the children only have a small patch of grass to play on ). So I suppose I save money that way too.

I dont buy sugar - or hot chocolate so I dont know about that QOQ.

I shop on a budget too, but what is essential to me isnt necessarily essential to you and vice versa. But, IME some cheap things ARE a false economy - and that applies to most cheap meats.

Heathcliffscathy · 09/01/2008 22:03

RHUBARB. SHAME ON YOU.

Rhubarb · 09/01/2008 22:03

Seriously, if you want to have a go then come on! Or piss off.
Back to your stone.

fordfiesta · 09/01/2008 22:03

oh and icequeen..... if it keeps you sane i dont begrudge you your fags either!!!!

nutcracker · 09/01/2008 22:04

Why are you making this personal Microwaveonly ?? I don't give a monkeys wether you already know rhubarb or not you are still being rude and personal when there is no need.

I happen to agree with everthing that Rhubarb has said.

TodayToday · 09/01/2008 22:04

We're the same way hatrick. We'll only buy chicken if it is at least free-range but we only have meat once or twice a week. We have fish about 3 times per week and veggie meals the rest of the week.

Rhubarb · 09/01/2008 22:04

Oooh, 2 people wanting to have a go now.
How big you both must feel.

nutcracker · 09/01/2008 22:04

Am i missing something ?

Heathcliffscathy · 09/01/2008 22:05

rhubarb. you are an intelligent woman.

you can shop on a budget and not buy shit horrible unhappy meat.

Rhubarb · 09/01/2008 22:05

Dunno nutty, I don't know who microwave is but she clearly loves that she knows me from Mumsnet. Sophable is just as normal.

TheIceQueen · 09/01/2008 22:05

you'd better not begrudge me my bl**dy fags...........you think I'm argumentative now.........you should see me without my roll-ups

VeniVidiVickiQV · 09/01/2008 22:05

I think you are looking at something like 31 or 32p a week QOQ.

ivykaty44 · 09/01/2008 22:05

I why it is the chickens that come first and not the pluckers on minimum wages, is it because they don't want to see this - why are none of the celebrates making a stance for better wages. Most are in the catering trade, one of the worst trades in this country for payment of staff and conditions of employment.

I think they should tidy thier own front garden before looking at other gardens to tidy.
