Nostalgic meals/meals from your childhood.

I am in a cookery/food group on Facebook and they have some challenges occasionally, this week the theme is nostalgia.

My mum wasn't much of a cook so my childhood meals were very basic, think frozen pizza, crispy pancakes etc. But she did make a lovely chicken and barley broth which I always crave when I'm feeling run down. What meals are nostalgic for you?

Mashed up hot egg/milk/pepper in a cup when you were ill.

allthesharks · 12/04/2022 00:36

Breaded chicken and chips in a basket.

Also, does anyone remember chocolate crunch. That may not have been what it was called. It was basically a thick chocolate custard with crumbled biscuit on top. I've re-created it with custard, hot chocolate mix and digestives.

Also, vesta chow mein. Amazing.

Corn beef hash. Not my favourite meal but one I remember. Quite like corn beef sandwiches though!

Been veggie all my adult life but there are a few things I miss

Steak and kidney pudding, prawn cocktail, crab sticks, roe chippy supper

Another vote for great school dinners where we were lucky enough to have as well as the standards

Ghoulash, stroganoff, gammon steaks with pineapple on top, custard tarts, cornflake treacle tart, rhubarb crumble with CUSTARD (I'm so fed up of getting my hopes up when I see a pud like this on a restaurant menu and they only serve it with ice cream these days! Even instant/ready made custard would be fine), bannoffee pie

Not so good and I really don't miss and probably contributed at least a little to me turning veggie

Liver and onions
Grey mince and tatties
Overcooked steamed cod and boiled potatoes

@Greensleeves see that shows how subjective this is I used to love pilchards on toast!

@Theoldcuriosityshop I also used to love stuffed hearts! Jack monroe posted a recipe recently and people lost their shit! But with the cost of living increases those who want to keep eating meat I think are going to have to become much less squeamish! It's ridiculous the meat that is wasted in this country because of that

I also used to love faggots in gravy with dumplings

Sometimes this kinda thing pops up on masterchef or great British menu etc and the testers are often very delighted as they remember eating such things

Scotch pies I miss I occasionally get my fix of hot water pastry via macaroni cheese pies but the cals are insane!

Frozen Black Forest gateaux

Ooohh yes please!

Things I still have sometimes:

Tomatoes on toast with loads of black pepper
"Chucky eggs" which from similar threads I know others have but call a different name - hard boiled egg in a mug, mashed with lots of butter and salt and pepper we used to mainly get this when we were poorly

I remember arctic roll and bejam frozen mousse - remember bejam?

Soup with chips in it here in Scotland soup and chips is standard option on most basic/greasy spoon type cafe menus

Birds Eye still make the crispy pancakes!

Brains Faggots. I loved them. My mum was not a good cook so these were heaven sent nectar!

lollipoprainbow · 12/04/2022 09:11

My mum used to make a lovely casserole, whenever I was ill I always craved it! That and proper lucozade in the glass bottle.

My mother’s Welsh rabbit. We used to eat it for supper with tinned tomato soup when DF was travelling or working late. Also her ham loaf with a mild mustardy horseradish sauce. I frequently chose this for my birthday dinner well into the teenage years.

My nan’s fried fish, cooked simply but perfectly hours after it was caught. I learnt after her death that I was her favourite grandchild (I am not used to being a favourite) and maintain that this is because I, a child of small appetite, told her age 6 upon asking for seconds that this was the best food I had ever eaten.

Sausage and chips ( home made, cooked in lard)
Brains faggots, mash and tinned peas
Mums home made mincemeat pies and jam tarts at Christmas, her shortcrust pastry was brilliant
Mums sponge puddings and spotted dicks, delicious
Big glass bottles of Corona orangeade and cherryade delivered by the milkman
Massive tins of orange juice, we’d have a small glass each before an occasion meal, so at Christmas, birthdays, Easter
Saturday tea which was sandwiches and cake, very plain but homemade and delicious, my mum rotated plain, currant, coconut and chocolate, served in the lounge in front of the telly, all other meals were in the kitchen at the table
Bought cream cakes - buns, horns, eclairs, vanilla slices
Mums home made meat pies, which were beef and onion in gravy in shortcrust pastry and our initials in pastry on top
Cooked full English breakfast at my gran’s when I stayed overnight, including freshly squeezed orange juice
Cheese salad crusty rolls and lemonade eaten in the garden in the late evening in the summer

lollipoprainbow · 14/04/2022 08:48

@TheOldLadyOfThreadneedleStreet sounds idyllic !

BonjourCrisette · 14/04/2022 09:36

I absolutely LOVE Brain's faggots.

PermanentTemporary · 14/04/2022 09:39

Mum's shepherd's pie. Incredibly delicious. But flavoured with guilt because she hated making it. It started with putting the mincer together which was a complex thing that attached to the kitchen table, then cutting up the leftover lamb from the Sunday roast, then mincing it, then deconstructing and cleaning the mincer, then starting cooking... oh but the results were amazing.

TheOldLadyOfThreadneedleStreet · 15/04/2022 05:39

My gran had a mincer and made sheperd’s pie with the left over roast too! I remember helping her attach it to the table and trying to turn the handle but it was hard work! Gran was not generally much interested in cooking but her shepherd’s pie was lovely. She also made great jams and chutneys every year which she loved doing.

Mrsjayy · 15/04/2022 09:03

My late Mil had a mincer I think it was her mothers she used it to make potted meat, which is bloody lovely but has the odds and sods of beef and marrowbone in it watching her make it wasn't for the squeamish!

BarryKentPoet · 15/04/2022 17:14

Mince & peas in gravy on buttered rolls
Stovies with bread & butter on the side
Mini kievs with smash
Fish finger pis (fish fingers topped with beans, mash then cheese & baked)
Scotch pie & beans
My mum's parsnip soup with crusty bread
Heinz tomato soup with cheese toasties to dip in

userxx · 15/04/2022 17:29

@nocoolnamesleft

My mum's chips. She was double frying them by the early 80s, far ahead of those celebrity chefs.

My dad did this too! Triple cooked chips are nothing new.
