Nostalgic meals/meals from your childhood.

I am in a cookery/food group on Facebook and they have some challenges occasionally, this week the theme is nostalgia.

My mum wasn't much of a cook so my childhood meals were very basic, think frozen pizza, crispy pancakes etc. But she did make a lovely chicken and barley broth which I always crave when I'm feeling run down. What meals are nostalgic for you?

My mum's chips. She was double frying them by the early 80s, far ahead of those celebrity chefs.

dollymuchymuchness · 11/04/2022 20:15

Meat and potato pie, cottage pie, steak and kidney pie. My mum was good with pies.

As someone who was born in the late 80's, nostalgic childhood food to me is absolute shite freezer junk. Today I am very tired and run down and I postponed our original dinner plans because I was craving 'cheap 90's school dinner' of sausage, chips and spaghetti hoops. I thought it was just my guilty cravings, but it would be interesting if this was comfort food for a whole generation of millennials. I also love eggy bread with ketchup, mini frozen sausage rolls with baked beans, fried egg with chunky chips, etc. I do know how to cook properly, but these are my nostalgia meals. For my 12 years older partner it's home made stews, and cottage pies and corned beef hash etc but give me Iceland crap any day.

@longtompot

My mind immediately went to Findus crispy pancakes. I also loved the frozen mousse we used to get. I never let mine defrost properly so it was more like icecream
I loved those, no-one can remember them when I reminisce. Also, Arctic Roll.

@BlackAndPinkNose

Chocolate sponge with mint custard c/o school dinners. Tried to recreate this unsuccessfully many times
Oh, I loved that Green mint custard. I loved it when they had ice cream and custard as choices on the same day, because I discovered that ice cream with hot custard on top was a perfect match, even better when it was the chocolate or mint custard.

I still eat most of the comforting food my Mum made when I was growing up. But I've not eaten her asparagus mornay in years. It sounds terrible - tinned asparagus (we could NEVER afford fresh stuff!), sliced boiled egg, occasionally bacon, with a cheese sauce and baked in the oven - but it is the best special breakfast, with some crusty bread.

I'm going to get her to make it when we visit NZ next year.

Wow I didn't expect so many responses! Loads of lovely ideas. I'm now craving angel delight or some old school cake and pink custard Grin

Solasum · 11/04/2022 23:33

@OldTinHat I rediscovered these over the pandemic and they are now a freezer staple. They taste exactly the same as I remember

AdaColeman · 11/04/2022 23:47

My Mother was Queen of the Yorkshire puddings. We used to have them with gravy as a first course, before the Sunday roast beef.
Another favourite was skate with black butter sauce.
She also used to make braised beef in a thick tomato sauce that we would have spaghetti, always exciting as the spaghetti came in a very long dark blue paper roll!

From school, liver & mash with onion gravy, and gypsy tart were my favourites

OMG! This was what we had, apart from the cheese chops? We had gigot chops mash and peas on a Saturday night while Dixon of Dock Green was on tv!
eleanorwish · 11/04/2022 23:50

I used to go to my gran's every week. We'd have steak and kidney pie and chips, followed by apple pie with Carnation evaporated milk.

MintyGreenDream · 11/04/2022 23:52

Birds eye "Steaklet" a long burger type thing with mash, tinned green beans and gravy.

MintyGreenDream · 11/04/2022 23:53

@Greensleeves are you in your early 40s because those school dinners are what I remember too

BitOutOfPractice · 11/04/2022 23:54

Mince and tatties. The mash as a volcano with mince lava, all surrounded by a pea sea.

Pallisers · 11/04/2022 23:58

when we were teenagers a couple of my cousins would always come to ours for tea on a Saturday night before we all went out wherever we were going. My mum usually did a big fry with chips but sometimes would do a ham salad with chips - god the cold salad and the hot chips and slices of bread and butter and tea --just lovely

TonksInPurple · 12/04/2022 00:03

Pasta with hienz tomato soup, grated cheese and a tin of tune.

IclimbedSnowdon · 12/04/2022 00:13

Liver and bacon
Lambs hearts
Mince and onions

Toad in the hole
Cod with creamy mash and parsley sauce
A great roast every Sunday
Steamed suet puds
Home made steak and kidney pie/pudding

Creme Caramel
Giant Yorkshire pudding spread with jam

I loved my mums cooking and enjoyed all these meals, although there are a few I wouldn't eat now.

We used to have this packet soup called crofters thick vegetable soup. It was served with tuna sandwiches. Usually a Saturday lunch before town for shopping. I tried it much later in life and found it horrendously salty.
