Nostalgic meals/meals from your childhood.

I am in a cookery/food group on Facebook and they have some challenges occasionally, this week the theme is nostalgia.

My mum wasn't much of a cook so my childhood meals were very basic, think frozen pizza, crispy pancakes etc. But she did make a lovely chicken and barley broth which I always crave when I'm feeling run down. What meals are nostalgic for you?

I don't have many good home food memories, most of our meals were gross (pilchards on toast, awful grey casseroles with tinned meatballs in them, etc) but school lunches...oh yes. Mince and onion tart, cheese and potato pie, I even loved the school cabbage with loads of salt and white pepper. The puddings were wonderful too - chocolate concrete with green (or pink) minty custard, jelly and cream, fruit pies, and some heavenly-tasting cheesecake which I'm sure came out of a packet, decorated with mandarin orange segments.

If I go to heaven when I die (unlikely) the caterers will be whoever did the puddings at my first primary school.

My mum still cooks all her classics so not really anything like that (although my mum is an amazing cook!).

Mine are all school dinners - chicken pie, sausage mash and peas, fish pie, toad in the hole, sponge and pink custard, rice pudding, iced buns, jam roly poly...

My husband has recently started working for Meals on Wheels and sometimes brings one or two of the meals home if they end up with extra. They are EXACTLY like school meals! Not sure I'd like them every day (or how healthy they are tbh...) but I do love them on occasion haha

Mushroom mattress. Two sheets of puff pastry filled with mushroom in a thick cheese sauce.

Spaghetti with ketchup and grated cheese.

Beef stew and dumplings, lasagne, toad in the hole, treacle sponge pudding, shepherd's pie.

JustSaying101 · 11/04/2022 18:17

"Cheese and potato pie", which is essentially cheesy mash in a baking dish, sprinkle grated cheese on top and add some sliced tomatoes. Bake in oven until crisp. Sheer carb heaven!

My nan made the best irish stew, soda bread and rhubarb tart. My mam did an amazing fry up every Saturday and a roast every Sunday. She also made cheesecakes, bonoffee pie, lemon meringue pie, and the best Christmas cake ever. I miss those two ladies so much I try to replicate their cooking but just doesn't taste the same.

Butterscotch tart and steamed ginger sponge with vanilla sauce, at school. Yum!

“Rissoles “
Sunday joint leftovers minced up, mixed with mashed potato, covered in breadcrumbs and fried.

This is a bit odd but my mum used to make sweetbreads cooked in sherry when I was very little (I think they were very cheap in the 70s). I absolutely loved them.

Other than that:

fishcakes made with tinned tuna, which we always had at the end of the week when most fresh food from last week's shop had run out

little pies made with minced beef and hot water crust pastry and carrots, quite dry inside

fried spam (LOVE) for breakfast with a fried egg and fried bread and fried tomato

homemade profiteroles with chocolate sauce

pork and egg (gala) pie

trifle

liver with mash and onion gravy

a weird thing that I have not had for years with tinned salmon covered in a thick white sauce and topped with chopped boiled egg - I really liked this and have no idea what it is even called and can't ask my mum as she has dementia so if anyone knows...

chicken soup with lentils and veg, always the day after roast chicken

TwilightSkies · 11/04/2022 19:12

Frozen Black Forest gateaux or Sara Lee chocolate gateaux.

Chocolate angel delight.

Not really a meal but Flintstones ice-pops! They were the best! Takes me straight back to childhood summers.

Chunky chicken out of a tin and rice.

mum2jakie · 11/04/2022 19:12

Treacle tart. Vanilla traybake with icing and sprinkles, served with custard. Chocolate cornflake crunch with custard too!

jusdepamplemousse · 11/04/2022 19:18

Mince with carrots (kind of stewed?) and boiled spuds with HP sauce. So good!

RinklyRomaine · 11/04/2022 19:21

Cheese and potato pie
Ham egg and chips
Boil in the bag beef and chips
Proper kosher style chicken soup with lokshen and matzos (cooked by grandma or dad)

We might all have to go back to eating corned beef hash the way things are carrying on

I paid £2.99 for a tin last week !!!
DisforDarkChocolate · 11/04/2022 19:47

Panacaldy (sure that's spelled incorrectly)
Liver (I can't make it edible)
My Dad's roast (he's got a way with meat)

Mostly, my Mam's broth with dumplings and extra peas because they were my favourite. Oh how I miss it.

ArabeI · 11/04/2022 19:50

One of my grandparents regularly used to lay on a 'cold cuts' luncheon on a Saturday afternoon. So, fresh delicatessen food, sandwiches, and cakes. All on cut glass plates and dishes.

Oh yes we had this and in the middle was a layer of chopped tinned tomatoes and grated cheese too. Absolute. Heaven!

Also sausage meat patties - excellent proper sausages unskinned and reshaped - shallow fried and served with mash and marrowfat peas and gravy. Thanks grandma 😍

School wise it was savoury mince topped with cheese crumble. Yesssss

ArabeI · 11/04/2022 19:54

Another grandparent made a lovely Irish stew, though I'm afraid she no longer recalls the exact recipe/method.

OldTinHat · 11/04/2022 19:59

Brains faggots, mashed potato and peas. Yum!
