Friends Over For Breakfast

I have friends (a couple with hearty appetites) over for a night soon. We’re going to go out for dinner & drinks but I’d like to have nibbles and drinks on arrival (before we got out) and then I’d like to have a nice breakfast the following morning.

I used to make big cooked breakfasts for friends but I don’t want to do that anymore. I’d rather have everything pre-made & ready to be tucked into. I don’t eat meat and tend not to buy it.

For the nibbles and drinks on arrival, I’m thinking:
Beer for him & pink Prosecco for her
Crisps
Nuts
Cheese on crackers with nice relish and olives

For the breakfast, I’m thinking a help yourself vibe with :

Homemade granola, yoghurt & homemade compote
Banana bread
Sourdough bread (bought) with butter and marmalade

Any other ideas please? Grin I haven’t had guests in a while so I guess I’m excited!

You sound like a very thoughtful and hospitable host.

Pancakes (could be premade) with streaky bacon (just shove in the oven/grill rather than fry) and maple syrup.

Workinghardeveryday · 19/03/2022 18:26

It sounds lovely but I think my dp would be disappointed without a bacon sandwich after a night out...

MaizeAmaze · 19/03/2022 18:30

Something sweet with the nibbles? Some chocolates or something?

I'd be eating bread and butter for breakfast... Some jam or honey for the bread? Croissants? Fresh fruit?

Love the evening off though may mean if it were me I'd not eat when out!

My only reservations re breakfast are the granola and sourdough are very specific tastes and not something I'd serve unless I knew for definite that my guests eat these. Could you have "normal" whitehead and maybe a small amount of fruit salad?

0blio · 19/03/2022 18:33

I'd prefer something hot, scrambled eggs only take a minute in the microwave or toast with nice toppings at least.

onepieceoflollipop · 19/03/2022 18:36

Are they big meat eaters?

I’d love that breakfast but they might prefer something less carby and more savoury.

Even if you (for example) had a tray of sausages and mini tomatoes to roast in the oven?
Not necessarily all the faff and steam/smell of a full cooked breakfast but as an option.

Or scrambled eggs with or without smoked salmon.
Or omelette
Or continental mini tray of cheeses/salami most supermarkets do these ready to serve

notacooldad · 19/03/2022 18:36

Lebneh ( easy to make, just strain a tub of full fat yogurt the day before)
Guests can add honey and /or nuts or berries to it,
Slices of mango, banana, grapes and pineapple on a platter.

That’s my usual breakfast anyway!

gingercat02 · 19/03/2022 18:39

Full cooked breakfasts and oodles of coffee are the only breakfast option with our friends. Very sexist drinks choices OP not all men drink beer or all women pink fizz

ginslinger · 19/03/2022 18:42

I would like a savoury option with breakfast so if you don't want to cook (and why should you?) I'd like some cheese

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 19/03/2022 18:43

I agree that something hot and protein-y would be a bit more special for breakfast. Maybe scrambled eggs, avocado and/or salmon on toast?

Sexnotgender · 19/03/2022 18:47

I’d do scrambled eggs with avocado and toast plus plenty of fresh coffee and nice fruit juice.

greenlynx · 19/03/2022 18:49

Tbh I would offer them choice of eggs and bacon, then coffee and pastries. Frozen pastries are really good and easy to bake. I would also have some bread, jam and marmalade, just in case.
Yogurt and granola are both very specific e.g none in my family would eat them for breakfast. DD might have yogurt as extra but not as main thing. My DS would eat yogurt but she’s always dieting and her breakfast is usually tiny.

Houseplantmad · 19/03/2022 18:50

For breakfast buy frozen pastries and bung them in the oven. Delicious and a lovely smell too. Some nice fruit too nice for breakfast.

Fayekrista · 19/03/2022 18:51

The pastries from the bakery in lidl are brilliant, croissants, pain au chocolate etc... warm them in the oven & they are a fresh as if you had just bought the.
As others have said eggs are fairly quick & easy.
Fruit, yogurt etc...
Or just all go to a local cafe & have whatever you want cooked for you lol

Avocado on toast and look in the freezer isle for raw frozen croissants. You just pop them straight in the oven and they taste and smell amazing.

EarringsandLipstick · 19/03/2022 19:16

OP you sound like a lovely host. I'd love to be staying with you! 😊

Sarcobaleno · 19/03/2022 19:17

Agree with pp's. I would prefer savoury. If you don't want to cook meat (absolutely fair enough) would you be ok about opening a packet of Parma ham and having some cheese? Then no cooking but still a lovely breakfast

madmumofteens · 19/03/2022 19:21

What about bagels scrambled egg and salmon/bacon 😘

Mindfulmarch · 19/03/2022 19:23

Your breakfast sounds lovely.

If meat eaters want meat then maybe they'll need to go out for breakfast! No reason you need to cook it, or even buy it!

iklboo · 19/03/2022 19:33

I wouldn't like the granola or banana bread myself. I like mixed meats, bread, cheeses & preserves - maybe some fresh fruit like melon, berries & grapes. Pastries, croissants etc are also very good.

TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo · 19/03/2022 19:36

Honestly rather than all this guessing I would just ask them what they would like for breakfast! If they prefer pancakes, sourdough, avocado and all the rest, simple bacon butties etc.

I would much rather be asked and if my DH was handed anything other than cornflakes or a bacon butty he would probably go hungry.

HellToTheNope · 19/03/2022 19:39

That's a lot of carbs. You can't make some gorgeous scrambled eggs?

HermioneKipper · 19/03/2022 21:00

The frozen pastries from marks and spencer are 👌

I personally like a savoury option too after a night drinking. What about some veggie sausages and beans?

violetbunny · 19/03/2022 21:46

You could prepare oeufs en cocotte ahead of time, then just bung them in the oven when you want to have them. I often make these for brunch and they always go down well, and feel a bit more "special".
