Friends Over For Breakfast

Nouveaunew · 19/03/2022 18:18

I have friends (a couple with hearty appetites) over for a night soon. We’re going to go out for dinner & drinks but I’d like to have nibbles and drinks on arrival (before we got out) and then I’d like to have a nice breakfast the following morning.

I used to make big cooked breakfasts for friends but I don’t want to do that anymore. I’d rather have everything pre-made & ready to be tucked into. I don’t eat meat and tend not to buy it.

For the nibbles and drinks on arrival, I’m thinking:
Beer for him & pink Prosecco for her
Crisps
Nuts
Cheese on crackers with nice relish and olives

For the breakfast, I’m thinking a help yourself vibe with :

Homemade granola, yoghurt & homemade compote
Banana bread
Sourdough bread (bought) with butter and marmalade

Any other ideas please? Grin I haven’t had guests in a while so I guess I’m excited!

Thanks so mock for the suggestions. I forget all right that some people wouldn’t eat granola or banana bread. The frozen pastries ideas is brilliant and I think that’s going to be my new ‘go to’ for overnight guests.

There’s no avoiding the hot stuff! I’ll make scrambled eggs and get some rashers and avocado. I’ll have the other stuff I mentioned in the OP as an option too. I’ll get juice and fruit and definitely lots of coffee.

You’re all angels. I really appreciate your responses.

Re the evening before, The drinks choices are because I know what they drink & I know he likes beer and she, like me, likes fizz. Great idea to have some chocolate too. I’ll bake chocolate brownies in advance.

It’s probably clear I’m a bit of a carb junkie and I probably need to do something about that lol!! Grin

Nothing wrong with being into carbs.its a vital food group only diet culture has d2monised.
Also with your fizz and pre drinks some choc covered straws and cherries might be nice.easy to prep and fridge well in advance.

kateandme · 20/03/2022 01:00

Strawberries*!

Nouveaunew · 20/03/2022 09:32

Chocolate covered strawberries are yum! Thanks! I’ll do those and they’d be nice with breakfast if there are any left over

I wouldn't worry about meat if you don't normally. I think your plan is lovely but with the additions you're now considering. I do a big pan of roasted potatoes and while they're cooking I do tomatoes, mushrooms, spinach and scrambled eggs.

dudsville · 20/03/2022 09:39

With toast and toppings. It takes about 30 min.

Nouveaunew · 20/03/2022 09:40

Sounds lovely @dudsville

For my 2c worth. I like serving a Mexican beans thing here. Prepare ahead - it will just need reheating. Bacon will go well with it, as will just toast, avo etc. Hot, tasty, filling, forgiving, vegan for those so inclined, goes well with bacon.

Sisisimone · 20/03/2022 10:49

Lots of good ideas here OP. Fwiw I wouldn't eat sourdough, granola, banana bread or yoghurt for breakfast and especially not after a night out drinking. If you don't want to cook meat (bacon rolls would be my go to to keep it simple) I'd probably do eggs on toast, croissants and pastries . Waitrose do bags of frozen pain aux raisins and they are delicious 😋

Nouveaunew · 20/03/2022 10:51

Thanks. I’m loving the frozen pastry idea! I’ll probably eat more of those than the guests!

gogohm · 20/03/2022 11:04

Fruit for breakfast definitely rather than compote

Personally I have to avoid high carb foods so couldn't eat anything else you are suggesting, eggs are my go to

Nouveaunew · 20/03/2022 15:01

@gogohm
Thanks. I’ll get some fruit in. I eat very little fruit and forget others do.

Croissants, crumpets, tea cakes, hot cross buns - some lovely flavours about.

Xmasbaby11 · 20/03/2022 19:42

Great ideas here. I wouldn't go overboard and don't think you need to cook anything for breakfast. Various bready things, frozen pastries, fruit and cheeses, cold meats etc sounds perfect.

FinnRussell · 20/03/2022 19:50

You sound like a lovely host. The good thing about not cooking anything is that there's less washing up. As a guest, I'd always help with the dishes and it would be great to have no greasy grill trays!

Nouveaunew · 20/03/2022 20:26

It’s just my kitchen is small and I always find when I cook hot food, I don’t really relax and enjoy the company. Scrambled eggs wouldn’t be too time consuming though I guess!

Fuckingfuckssake · 20/03/2022 20:47

I do scrambled eggs and then some salmon for the carnivores because I don't like the smell of bacon in the house anymore and the salmon doesn't need any more prep than to stick it on a
plate!

Nouveaunew · 20/03/2022 21:43

Thanks. I agree. I used to buy meat for people but I don’t like seeing it in the fridge anymore. If it was a dinner, I’d figure something out but it’s avoidable for breakfast. Yeah I think it’ll be salmon & eggs & I’ll put out the other stuff buffet-style too. I’ll have a tray with banana bread, sourdough bread & frozen - oven-fresh pastries, preserves, granola, cereal … and then the hot stuff will be salmon & eggs & juice & coffee too.

Your guests are very lucky OP, sounds a real feast!

Are you likely to be very hungover? If so, I'd scrap your lovely plans and get in a few chicken and mushroom pot noodles. Maybe a multipack of Skips 🤣🤣

Nouveaunew · 20/03/2022 22:23

@Sisisimone

Ha ha! Yeah we’ll be hungover - there’s no pretending we won’t be! I’ll still do the breakfast though - food always gets me out of bed Grin

(I’ll keep a multipack of Skips on standby though Wink)

Something sweet with the nibbles? Some chocolates or something?

Ew no. Pre dinner drinks call for something salty. Prosecco will taste like vinegar after eating chocolate.

Cocogreen · 20/03/2022 23:00

Don't mess around with cooking the next morning, you'll be tired.
I often have breakfast with friends and the menu looks like yours except if it's at mine I'll make a breakfast quiche the day before which has bacon, eggs, onion and capsicum in it, all you have to do is heat it.

indignatio · 21/03/2022 21:30

Lots of lovely ideas here, shall pinch some. If you do decide to cook meat, I recommend ready made (personally I favour Tesco finest) mini pigs in blankets. One dish in the oven to do its thing, both piggy food groups covered.
If the oven is on, then a separate tray with flat mushrooms and cherry tomatoes is also a possibility

Thewindwhispers · 21/03/2022 21:33

For posh breakfasts I do frozen pain au chocolate with a packet of pre-cut exotic fruit likemmelon, strawberries, pineapple… And smoothie and nice coffee.
