Chickpea curry recipe - Help please

I'm trying to cut down on food bills so announced tonight that I am making a chickpea curry next week.

DH is a big meat eater so looked unimpressed but said he will try it. DD is a very fussy eater so looked equally unimpressed. DS seemed keen.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a fabulous recipe that might sway them? I'm determined to make one,

Chick peas are delicious in a curry! Hopefully they will love it!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 29/10/2021 20:49

As a veggie of 35 years standing, I’m not sure that chickpeas are a very good transition dish for dedicated meat eaters.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 29/10/2021 20:51

Google Alison Roman the stew.

Chickpeas and turmeric curry type of thing.

Not a recipe but a tip I guess. when I make chickpea curry I add in potatoes. Or mushrooms. And a good shake of masala. If you live near any Indian food stores or supermarket with Indian food section you can buy "Chana Masala" and dried fenugreek to add flavour.

CottonSock · 29/10/2021 20:53

My kids love it. I always add a tin of coconut milk to mine, plus a tiny bit of cornflour to stop it splitting. Plain old simple curry powder would be fine. Add it to fried onions, garlic and ginger. Then a tin of tomatoes and boil a but then tins of chickpeas and coconut milk. It you have it, curry paste is a bit nicer than powder.

Cervicalflop · 29/10/2021 20:53

Could add in pieces of paneer cheese as it has a bit of a texture to it.

theneverendinglaundry · 29/10/2021 20:53

If you like mushrooms then this recipe is good:

And I disagree. I'm a huge meat eater, but chickpeas are my weakness. For the adults maybe add spinach at the end

Sexnotgender · 29/10/2021 20:56

This is lovely. Potato and chickpea.

Is there a reason you are only asking about chickpeas?

To cut down on food bills but keep the carnivores happy, buy half the amount of chicken and add plenty of veg and chickpeas, you'll get two or three times the number of portions which can be frozen for a later date. DH wouldn't relish the idea of a chickpea curry but I do a chicken curry that has far more chickpeas, mushrooms, peppers etc than chicken and it's one of his favourite meals. He was raised in a very meat and two veg household, so to move away from meat with dinner is a psychological barrier I think. Funnily his parents are now vegetarian! We eat a lot of fish to reduce meat consumption, but that's not usually the cheaper option.

Fry onions in oil with cumin seeds, coriander and chilli flakes. Add crushed garlic, tin of tomatoes, roasted sweet potato. Heat through, add tin of drained chickpeas. Add some Marigold veggie stock. Heat a bit more and add some fresh spinach just before serving.

Serve with rice, yogurt or raita, and some homemade flatbreads ( Jamie Oliver has a good recipe).

This is my go to chickpea curry: www.easycheesyvegetarian.com/15-minute-creamy-chickpea-curry/

It's amazing.

MilduraS · 29/10/2021 21:10

Lots of chickpea recipes so won't add to the list but if you're using an onion, save a quarter. Finely chop it then cover in lemon juice and a pinch of salt before starting the rest of the cooking. Stir it every once in a while and when the food is ready use as a topping.

I did chickpea masala with onion pickle and potato parathas a couple of weeks ago. It tasted like a real treat. This week I went for cheese naans which were even better and easier. Difficult to photograph the recipe but I've tried. Between step 3 and 4 add 25g of extra mature cheddar to each naan, fold over and roll out again. Jeera is a mix of nigella, mustard seeds, cumin and fenugreek- 2tsp of any of the four would work.

Oops meant between step 4 and 5!

My DH is vegan and we've never done a chickpea curry, so I would agree with IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads there's better options.

Why not look for curries with an interesting range of vegetables. I recently bought Spicebox by Grace Regan. This Tomato and Aubergine curry from her book is tasty and easy to make; serve with rice and dal.

I'm going to make again a couple of the curries over the weekend - I've got the ingredients to make the Sweet Potato, Shallot and Aubergine Bhuna and the Butterbean, Squash & Spinach Coconut Curry.

I do like Chickpeas in a Tagine. We do one with Carrots, parsnips and prunes.

Jamie Oliver did 3 vegetarian curries in one episode of his Together series. One had chickpeas in. We enjoyed all of them.

Beecham · 29/10/2021 21:47

I wouldn't do chickpeas as a first non-meat curry.

Absolute winner is Dal Makhani [[https://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/dal_makhani_30779/amp ]] which I would recommend making the day before. It's genuinely yummy.

Lanaa · 29/10/2021 21:50

This one is delicious

Lanaa · 29/10/2021 21:55

This one is a firm favourite in our house too. Ex bodybuilder DP, who used to eat meat with every meal, thinks this curry js delicious.

Chetna has hundreds of curry recipes on her channel, which are easy to follow and tasty too.
