Does anyone actually only eat sustainable fish?

I have the River Cottage Fish Book and there's a list of which fish to avoid.

They are:
1.Whitebait
2.Cod (mostly)
3.Hake

  1. Bluefine tuna
  2. Sharks & huss
  3. Skate & rays
  4. Wild halibut
  5. Sea bass (unless line caught etc)
  6. Wild salmon
10. Eel

Am as gutted as a, um, fish.
I can't eat skate wings?! No eels at all? No whitebait? And even tuna is suspect?

And that's just the Absolutely Do Not Eat blacklist - lots and lots of others are 'avoid if possible'.

How easy do you reckon it is to up one's fish intake (which I want to do for all sorts of reasons) and avoid that lot? Am a bit bored with mackerel and farmed salmon.

Thanks Motherhurdicure.

The book also has a list of fish to eat more of, but it's mostly stuff like garfish or pouting that you never ever see.

Maybe I just need to march into the fishmonger and go 'What have you got today that's sustainable?'

Is mackerel on the list? I lurve mackerel. I also love trout. The only cod I ever buy is in ds's fish fingers.

Yes, mackerel is on the 'eat more' list. We eat a lot. And trout is allowed, but dh doesn't like it.

Hooray for mackerel and trout then. Actually i do like plaice, which I know is iffy, but some white fish is good for you too.

Kathyate6mincepies · 10/12/2007 12:03

Yeah plaice is an MCS 4 (only just allowed). I love plaice.
