Royal icing figures

I want to make some figures for DD's birthday cake in 2 months and I quite fancy using the icing from the Christmas cake to save me making it twice [lazy]
Would they keep that long?
Any hints or tips for how to make them?

I've never made royal icing figures, just fondant icing, but I would think they'd keep for quite a long time in an airtight box.
