If a recipe says all purpose flour does that mean that plain flour won't do? sorry to be so thick but a top chef i aint!

No that should be fine - I think it means not self-raising flour.

All-purpose flour is plain flour.

Yep - all purpose flour is what we call plain flour in the US. It doesn't have anything added.
