dd wants to make a cake in yesterday'Guardian" baking section that calls for 200ml of sour cream. I have double cream and yoghurt in the fridge. WIll a mixture of the two do instead? TIA

According to some foodie prog in the week, best alternative is cream, lemon juice and a pinch of salt.

Cream + lemon juice is sour cream.

Thank you - it's now in the oven and the bowl is being licked!

Next question - why do you put sour cream in cakes? I've never done it before. This recipe looks like an ordinary everyday all in one sponge, but with sour cream in it! What does it add, apart from calories?

I made a choc chip sour cream cake and it stayed moist for over a week, which I put down to sour cream.
