I want to make a warming beef stew for tea, but want to prepare it quickly. I have stewing steak, onions, leeks, carrots, red wine and suet. Can anyone give me a quick tasty recipe please?

TIA

Chuck everything except the suet into a casserole dish or slow cooker with a stockcube and some water. Bung in oven or slow cooker base and leave on a low light all day. 20mins before serving cuck 1 cup suet and 2 cups self raising flour in a bowl with some salt and a few herbs add cold water till you have a fairly dry dough, cut dough into 8 and put in the stew to cook for 20 mins. Serve with mash potatoes.

So you wouldn't brown anything first then?

Nope, I find that it tastes better and comes out really tender if I don't bother to brown it first.

Tip for making it really tasty:

(courtesy of Waitrose recipe card!)

Once stew has been prepared and is already cooking in oven, remove about 20-30mins from end of cooking time and add a couple of tbsp of horseradish.

Very lovely!

It's funny you suggested that nnb because I had meant to have some horseradish sauce with it but forgot. I bet it's lovely. Have you ever had pickled red cabbage with it? I had some at a friends recently and it was delicious.

I love red cabbage too. Quite nice also when it's been stewed a while with raisins.
