Best Gluten-Free Food

Inspired by the thread about unexpectedly amazing food. I thought it would be fantastic to have tried & tested/recommended Gluten Free foods and recipes as a resource to share.

Being coeliac, I mostly cook from scratch as a necessity but tend to get into a bit of a food rut, so would love to hear about other people’s favourites for inspiration please.

I have recently discovered Warburton’s crumpets, which are leaps and bounds ahead of any other brand in terms of texture, taste and the fact they don’t crumble to dust at the lightest touch.

My go-to bread is the M&S Made Without Wheat brown seeded loaf. It’s the only one I’ve found that has both flavour and texture and works equally well untoasted as it does toasted.

One of my favourite homemade meals at the moment is butternut and sage risotto (GF and vegan). Simple, comforting and sooooo tasty!

One of my worst GF experiences was Tesco’s own brand mince pies. So grim! Sickeningly sweet but not particularly fruity filling and pastry that tasted raw. It was that bad I had to spit it out and even DH (who will inhale anything sweet), wouldn’t touch them.

My usernamesake Ginger cake is from glutenfreecuppatea blog mentioned upthread, it's lovely but don't go too mad on the ginger unless you love it strong. glutenfreecuppatea.co.uk/2017/09/15/gluten-free-jamaican-ginger-loaf-cake-recipe-dairy-free-low-fodmap/

An excellent blog is From the Larder. Her cakes are exquisite.

GlutenFreeGingerCake · 17/05/2021 19:36

I've been looking at the blog suggested by @gelatodipistacchio and interested in what she has to say about xanthan gum, does anyone else avoid it? I am against cutting things out unless absolutely necessary, makes life so much harder, but it does make sense it might be hard to digest.

gelatodipistacchio · 17/05/2021 20:09

I use xanthan gum without compunction - but I am not coeliac, just wheat allergic.

GlutenFreeGingerCake · 17/05/2021 20:48

Thanks I must say I don't want to cut it out but I will have to keep an eye on it.

The new warbutons super soft rolls! The closest thing to normal bread!!
This, DS has had these this weekend, they look a bit grey but he says they tasted amazing. They felt lovely and soft.

Gu Free From chocolate and vanilla cheesecakes
Ben & Jerry's non dairy peanut butter and cookies
La Boulangere vegan croissants (in Tesco)
La Gnoccheria GF gnocchi (in Asda)

Anyone had any luck with eating out and take aways? I can’t find anything to eat and end up smuggling gf cakes into cafes!

fallingsnowflakes · 20/05/2021 20:54

Indian is usually all gluten free if you avoid the naan and be careful with the starters. Cafes are a bit hit and miss, I find there's usually a brownie on offer Smile. It is always worth asking, coffee #1 for example often has several options, but none labelled as such. Restaurants that cook their own food (as apprised to chain restaurants that have everything preprepared) are way more flexible at making what you want gluten free, but your less likely to see it marked on the menu - which I always find a little stressful!

gelatodipistacchio · 20/05/2021 21:19

@SinisterBumFacedCat I don't naturally like chain restaurants, but I actually love Zizzi and Pizza Express for their family friendly and gf offerings.

I am not that sensitive (wheat allergy) and I happily eat in all sorts of restaurants, ordering naturally gluten free things. By way of example, I was at a local French restaurant last night and the steak frites was labeled gf on the menu. They knew straight away which sauces were gf.

In nice restaurants and chain restaurants, staff usually are able to get you a gf menu or arrange for a gf meal - it's just that you have to ask, which obviously is annoying. I also do a lot of online pre-visit research to check the options out

Have just discovered Waitrose free from gluten free smoked haddock and cod fish cake with spinach. Seriously good and as close as home made IMO.

And right now 2 packs for a fiver.

ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn · 22/05/2021 17:21

These are lush, GF and vegan.

Aldi's Ashfield farms breaded ham is gluten free (using gluten free breadcrumbs).

Fivemoreminutes1 · 24/05/2021 05:02

Leon is possibly my favourite place for a healthy quick lunch with a wide choice of gluten free options such as falafel served with rice and slaw. Clear and well displayed allergy labelling.
Honest Burger serves arguably the best burger in a gluten free bun along with house chips with rosemary salt which can’t be beaten. They even offer gluten free Daura beer!

Misty9 · 24/05/2021 08:52

I love Leon and wish they'd open one in my city. As it is, I've factored in enough time for lunch on my next trip to London Grin

I had a go at making gf cheese oatcakes a few years ago. They came out better than expected and I've made them many times since. I sometimes often end up scoffing the lot while they're still warm.

Preheat oven to 210C. Whizz up 110g oats and 100g strong cheddar, grated, in a food processor. Pour into a bowl, add 1/2T oil and mix through. Add around 60ml warm water (enough to make a dough you can roll, not too sticky or too crumbly). Roll out on a board and cut into circles. Use a spatula to lift the oatcakes on to an oven tray covered with baking paper. Bake for around 20 mins, til toasty looking around the edges.

HelloPudding · 31/05/2021 23:30

*Turner/fish slice, not spatula.

Tipster100 · 03/06/2021 08:09

Myself and my two daughters (8 and 6) are all gluten free and two of us are unable to eat gluten free oats. My reaction to gf oats is really strong so I have to be really careful.
Some of the shop bought items we buy have been mentioned but in case it's useful we buy the following - bearing in mind these are mostly for the children as I'm happy without carb stuff so these are what their little taste buds allow:

Schar pizza (marguerita). Nice thin base and you can add stuff if you need to. Cheaper than some other options too.

Ocado FF chicken nuggets
Doherty's frozen cocktail sausages (can cook from frozen so v useful)
M&S brown seeded bread
Genius cob - both versions
M&S fish fingers
M&S sausage rolls
Lensi GF lasagne sheets
M&S penne pasta
Tesco macaroni
M&S quiches (yay!) and tarts
M&S gf pork pie
Warbutons Tiger loaf

Think that's it! Oh, and the Becky Excell 3 ingredient Nutella cookies are an amazing thing to have in your recipe repertoire. So quick and easy and they don't crumble!

Todayisanewday75 · 04/06/2021 16:42

Not a food but the best thing I’ve bought since DS had to go gf was a Yum Asia rice cooker. The rice is so good that DC prefer it it pasta (and I don’t have to cook two different types of pasta).

Rummo pasta is definitely his favourite but he also likes red lentil pasta.

In terms of baking madeleine shaw’s 5 ingredient peanut butter cookies are a big hit and easy to make as are Nigella’s chocolate macaroons.

By far the best bread is from Tilley’s gluten free bakery, proper thick slices. They’re based in Cornwall but come to our local market and do nationwide delivery. They also do really nice pizza bases, they’re massive but DS loves that because most gf pizzas are pretty small.

Todayisanewday75 · 04/06/2021 16:45

He also likes sainsburys gf naans, either with curry or as a pizza base.

IamEarthymama · 04/06/2021 17:06

Hi I have been following a gluten free diet for our 4 years.

I am most fussy about bread. I have bags of breadcrumbs in the freezer from all the loaves I have tried and rejected.
I like Schar bread best but always toast it.

I buy GF pizza base and add my own toppings.

I use Doves Farm flour and use Prue Leith's recipe for pastry.
I make Nigella's Breakfast pancakes substituting GF flour.

I like M&S's gf fish range, quiche and cakes.
I wish they included gf food in their offers.

For eating out locally in South Wales I enjoy the food at Loingers and absolutely love the GF pizza at Zizzi's.
In Glastonbury Knights chippie is GF on Thursdays which is fab.

Good luck to everyone who have recently decided to follow a GF diet. I hope uou all find that it improves your health
