Best Gluten-Free Food

Inspired by the thread about unexpectedly amazing food. I thought it would be fantastic to have tried & tested/recommended Gluten Free foods and recipes as a resource to share.

Being coeliac, I mostly cook from scratch as a necessity but tend to get into a bit of a food rut, so would love to hear about other people’s favourites for inspiration please.

I have recently discovered Warburton’s crumpets, which are leaps and bounds ahead of any other brand in terms of texture, taste and the fact they don’t crumble to dust at the lightest touch.

My go-to bread is the M&S Made Without Wheat brown seeded loaf. It’s the only one I’ve found that has both flavour and texture and works equally well untoasted as it does toasted.

One of my favourite homemade meals at the moment is butternut and sage risotto (GF and vegan). Simple, comforting and sooooo tasty!

One of my worst GF experiences was Tesco’s own brand mince pies. So grim! Sickeningly sweet but not particularly fruity filling and pastry that tasted raw. It was that bad I had to spit it out and even DH (who will inhale anything sweet), wouldn’t touch them.

The coconut collaborative do lovely choc ganache type pots and also a divine melt in the middle choc puddings.

Aldi have prewetts biscuits in at the moment

I am lactose intolerant as well as coeliac, so my recommendations are influenced by that. For pies and pasties, I'd recommend Baked to Taste. They're based in Honiton and have an online shop, but you can find them stocked randomly elsewhere including at a farm shop near us.

Seconding Promise bakery from Sainsbury & Ocado. The choc chip brioche is not horrendously bad for us and tastes great.

Most Mary Berry recipes (Victoria sponge/chocolate cake) work fine with a straight swap of GF flour. As does BBC Good Food's banana bread.

Most M&S Made Without is off my list because it has butter, but I second the spring rolls, plus the prawn and date crispy toasts. I don't see their Thai fishcakes on Ocado, but they used to be GF and were full of flavour.

Finally, if you live near or want to place an order for delivery with Cook, they have lots of GF and milk free options. I like their red Thai chicken curry, beef Massaman, Keralan prawn and mango and Bombay potatoes. They also do options for 2 or 4 people. It's not cheap, but everything I have tried so far has been delicious. You may need to check the product ingredients on the website as some items are gluten free, but not on the gluten free list.

Finally, where do I get the supermarket GFC Leon? I fear I might be drooling.

Made the Becky Excell scones recently and they were a disaster, not sure where I went wrong! Forgot to say the Nigella molten cakes aren't specifically GF but work very well with rice flour.

Buddywoo · 11/05/2021 20:28

I do not have a sweet tooth and dont generally eat cake but as previously mentioned I LOVE the M&S Coffee and Walnut cake. It is not sweet just really delicious.

Watching with interest. Toddler DS3 was diagnosed coeliac yesterday. It's a strange new world we've entered-but it still involves Pom Bears so all is good as far as he is concerned...

theleafandnotthetree · 11/05/2021 21:04

Oh @chilledteacher good luck, it's daunting but I hope this thread has given you confidence that there are plenty of great products out there and that there are actually loads of things you can make yourself that are naturally gluten free. I catered for my son's Communion for 40 people and everything - the main course of coq au vin with rice plus loads of different salads, plus deserts of pavlova, brownies and trifle - were gluten free. No one even noticed any difference

Another win here was this tortelloni, I've got some of their gnocchi and egg pasta tagliatelle and pappardelle to try too.

@ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn could you tell me where you got the diffatti tortilloni please? I have seen the gnocchi in Waitrose and Sainsburys but not the pasta. I’m very keen to try!!!

They have an online shop:

Thank you viper. I was hoping there was somewhere I could avoid the delivery charges but I might just have to take the hit!! Grin

ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn · 13/05/2021 21:17

I had a Mrs Crimbles GF madeleine today and it was so good I had to double check the packaging Grin

BestestBrownies · 13/05/2021 22:46

I hear you @ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn Grin. Most of the Mrs Crimble stuff is just waaaaaay too sweet for my taste, so I tend to avoid it. Interesting to hear you found something good.

I had a Warburton’s wrap yesterday with some Gosh falafel bites and salad, but I think I prefer the Sainsbury’s own brand ones.

These are an amazing replacement for Pringles

YellowScallion · 14/05/2021 07:47

I actually think things are worse than a couple of years ago. Lots of products disappearing, our local Lidl used to have a whole shelf of stuff including gluten free bread but now seems to offer some gluten free cookies only. Most of the space where they used to have fresh and frozen in our local Tesco has been filled with vegan stuff instead.

gelatodipistacchio · 14/05/2021 08:31

@YellowScallion Absolute - it is down to food trends. I used to always go to the Free From convention in Olympia every year. Gluten free was surging 5 years ago. Lately, companies are putting all of their 'alternative' market emphasis on vegan. It's crap for us. I especially hate how so many GF foods are being veganised. Fake dairy makes me wretch.

I tried to attach a photo of Curvies, but Mumsnet is not cooperating.

Apileofballyhoo · 14/05/2021 15:48

Agree about the shelves filling up with vegan stuff! Very annoying.

ImpossibleGirl · 14/05/2021 15:49

Most of my fave items have already been mentioned.

Has anyone seen the Mrs Crimble Cheese Crackers recently? I can't find them anywhere locally :(

My two best GF cookbooks are:
Victoria Hall - the BEST date pudding and caramel sauce ..

I’ve discovered caputo flour from Amazon for pizza. It’s terribly expensive and I reserve it only for pizza but it’s worth paying about £14 a kg for!

Discovered Hippeas yesterday and they’re really nice....again very expensive!

SinisterBumFacedCat · 14/05/2021 20:15

I have discovered gluten free beer is better than normal. I really like Daura.

zizl · 14/05/2021 20:53

I've been meaning to try some GF beer, that's something I miss actually.

theleafandnotthetree · 14/05/2021 23:27

There are loads on the market now, Daura as has been mentioned which is very good, Peroni do a gluten free beer which is pretty weak but perfectly drinkable, one called Hufi which is good too. I had one called Foxes Rock recently - Irish and possibly only available in Ireland - and I really enjoyed it with Indian food, I thought it had an aley kind of a taste which I liked.
zizl · 15/05/2021 11:17

Thanks, I'll have a look!

The subway GF bread is surprisingly nice BUT I think there's been some kind of cross contamination every time I've eaten it.

I'm pretty sure they advise it's not suitable for coeliacs

mn81987 · 15/05/2021 14:10

The new warbutons super soft rolls! The closest thing to normal bread!!

ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn · 15/05/2021 20:59

Pieminster chicken pie tried tonight and it was bloody gorgeous, superb pastry by any standards.
