Inspired by the thread about unexpectedly amazing food. I thought it would be fantastic to have tried & tested/recommended Gluten Free foods and recipes as a resource to share.

Being coeliac, I mostly cook from scratch as a necessity but tend to get into a bit of a food rut, so would love to hear about other people’s favourites for inspiration please.

I have recently discovered Warburton’s crumpets, which are leaps and bounds ahead of any other brand in terms of texture, taste and the fact they don’t crumble to dust at the lightest touch.

My go-to bread is the M&S Made Without Wheat brown seeded loaf. It’s the only one I’ve found that has both flavour and texture and works equally well untoasted as it does toasted.

One of my favourite homemade meals at the moment is butternut and sage risotto (GF and vegan). Simple, comforting and sooooo tasty!

One of my worst GF experiences was Tesco’s own brand mince pies. So grim! Sickeningly sweet but not particularly fruity filling and pastry that tasted raw. It was that bad I had to spit it out and even DH (who will inhale anything sweet), wouldn’t touch them.

Glutinous rice - Will see if these photos work - just examples from an image search but these are typical of what I buy. I find it in "Asian shops", which also tend to have a good selection of "rice stick" noodles.

I've bought from Wildcraft, wasn't keen on the bread, but the Danish style pastries and scones were excellent. The doughnut was a bit stodgy but not in a totally bad way Grin

Newusernames · 10/05/2021 15:13

We’ve also had doughnuts from Wildcraft which were nice but not as good as hoped!

Simply Cake Co do the best gluten free brownies. We’ve ordered loads for our wedding desert table.

Pizza Punks do a great takeaway GF pizza and we’ve recently found a Chinese near us which can do GF which was a relevation!

Cheesybiscuitsmineallmine · 10/05/2021 15:28

Marks and Spencer date and walnut crackers are delicious!

@Pythonesque

Things aren't too bad - the vegie child got packed off to boarding school .... (that's inaccurate - she earned a place at a choir school so started boarding at almost 10, and insisted on continuing boarding for senior school at 13+)

I was severely dairy allergic as an infant back when it was rarely recognised and very little was available. My parents bought tinned soy milk by the case on prescription for me till I was 12, when commercial stuff became available in the supermarkets. By then I could tolerate some dairy in food ok. We then started to work out that everyone was coeliac through my teens. So yes, the range of stuff available nowadays makes it feel easy :)

Does anyone else have a problem with "gluten-free oats"? My understanding is that these have been grown to be free of contamination with other grains, and are now thought to be ok for most coeliacs as the protein in them is slightly different. My mother and sister have confirmed that they can NOT tolerate oats, I don't dare test it out myself as I get very severe mood and concentration problems with gluten. There was a time when I could buy nice GF ginger biscuits, the last few years they've always got oats in them :(

I find that because I went most of my life without oats - that was the advice for such a long time - that now they mostly don't really agree with me when I do eat them. Some products like the Nairns oatcakes are ok but a whole bowl of porridge would be too much. Similarly, there's a very nice McCambridges brown soda bread on the market here which I consume occasionally but which I know I'll pay a price for. I think I consume so few things with grains - I mostly eat a naturally gluten free diet - that I've made myself sensitive if that makes sense. That's why I grind my teeth slightly when people talk about randomly going on a gluten free diet with no diagnosis or anything, be very wary of excluding types of food unless you're prepared to not eat them ever again. Very unscientific I know but that's my experience.

I've just read the thread to check it hasn't been mentioned, but for recipes I highly highly recommend becky excell - her website is www.glutenfreecuppatea.co.uk but her cookery book how to make anything gluten free, is amazing so far. The fakeaways section especially for those missing takeaway!

I'm low fodmap too so a bit harder to cater for, but favourite gf products are promise bread (but extortionate prices), prewetts biscuits, schar paninis, schar frozen white rolls (almost like normal), morrisons chocolate swirl pastries are my little treat, good fellas pizza aren't bad, aldi do dark choc orange rice cakes, waitrose does amazing gf yorkies and battered fish.

Think that'll do! Grin

zizl · 10/05/2021 15:56

@Misty9 the crispy chilli beef recipe is incredible! I just hate the cleaning up afterwards 😂

JamesAnderson · 10/05/2021 19:29

Gluten free Yorkshire's

200ml rice milk (can use cows milk if you're ok with it)
130g cornflour
4 eggs
Salt and pepper

20 minutes at fan 200°c
Then 5 minutes at fan 130°c

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 10/05/2021 19:40

I third the Dr Oetkers GF pizza. My Sainsbury's delivery supermarket seems to have stopped doing it though.

pastabest · 10/05/2021 19:42

Jackson's Gluten Free Bakery for pies. They deliver all over the country and their pork pies are amazing.

We have a freezer just for gluten free pies etc so we can buy loads at a time to freeze.

Barilla for pasta

Co-op fish fingers

Kitkat bunnies/Santa's when they are in season. Again I bulk buy them as once they've gone they've gone.

Morrison's gluten free pizzas from the pizza counter, whatever toppings you like.

Morrison's pepperoni pizza from the frozen section.

Morrison's frozen GF lasagnes

Sainsburys crispy chilli beef and co-ops sweet and sour chicken for that takeaway feeling. Co-op or M&S gluten free spring rolls

M&S tempura chicken

Lidl's own brand Pringles

Asda or Tesco gluten free onions rings, but these have been extremely hRd to get hold of for a couple of years but they are delicious

Ooh, I've been dying to try this so that's good to know! I made the Chinese chicken in curry sauce one (something like that!) with egg fried rice and it was lovely. Its the amount of oil for deep frying which puts me off but I'll give it a go I think.

shallIswim · 10/05/2021 19:55

Haven't rttt but any sticky toffee pudding recipe is fine with a straight substitution of ordinary flour for gluten free. Always works

ParisNext · 10/05/2021 20:01

Coeliac here with a coeliac dd9 and my mother so 2 GF houses. What a fantastic thread! Im overseas with very limited choice but the thing I dream of in the U.K. and my absolute favourite thing is LEON lemon drizzle bar and basically anything by LEON/ GF nuggets etc. Highlight of my trips and at the Eurotunnel one they let me buy 24 lemon slices (they store them frozen) to take home.

Ooh yes, they don't go soggy quickly either!

We made doughnuts (and other stuff!) on Saturday from the How To Make Everything Gluten Free book. Divine.

Almostascot · 10/05/2021 20:31

All the mash direct range is gluten free and very tasty if you fancy an easy option. The beer battered onion rings, croquettes and chilli baby bake potatoes are my favourites.

I also like the Nairn’s rosemary and sea salt flat breads.

I second this!! I'm sure I found some with jam in them as well, but I've not seen them since so wondering if I imagined that

Where can you buy those please?
ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn · 11/05/2021 17:56

M&S tempura chicken and veg spring rolls were a big hit here.

Anyone know who does GF samosas?

The best GF mince pies (and I test them all) are Lidl closely followed by Aldi.

Apileofballyhoo · 11/05/2021 18:03

Very chocolatey desserts - Nigella's molten baby cakes and green and black's flourless chocolate mousse cake. I usually make the Dove Farm brownies as brownies or cake (make sure to take out of the oven sooner rather than later), but I'll give Nigella's a go.

My shortcrust pastry for minimal breakage is 150g rice flour, 75g butter, 1 medium egg (you don't need it all so can use some for egg wash - I chuck it in to quiche), cold water. Grate in the butter with a small cheese grater and don't touch it much. Add most of the egg and enough cold water to bring it together (this isn't much). Wrap in baking paper and put in the fridge. Roll out between 2 sheets of baking paper, and just lift the bottom one onto whatever tin your using. That covers a 7½ inch square tin I use for a small quiche.

Loads of fantastic recipes and there is also a recently released cook book 'how to make anything gluten free'
She is on social media too - Becky Excell

These are gorgeous. I have tried most of the dark chocolate ginger cookies from the supermarkets and these are the best!

Also love the M and S blueberry muffins.

I made some brownies yesterday but substituted flour with gluten free flour and they tasted better than normal.
