Throwing up solids - reflux?

Hi my ds is 5 months and in all other respects a really healthy happy baby. He takes his bottles of formula fine without any trouble - however he is being sick quite often when he has solids. He is not unwell or distressed by this. Has anyone else had this - it is happening most days and doesn't matter whether it is sweet or savoury food. He is having jars - but has done it with home made purees too. HV said it could be reflux but just wondered if anyone else had had this sort of thing with their baby? Any suggestions appreciated.

5 months is still quite young for solids. Perhaps giving them a rest for a bit and concentrating on milk til he's a bit older might help, especially as he's fine on just milk? Worth a try - might save you doing a bit of laundry!

i used jars with dd2. she seemed to be sick on the more 'processed' jars. if i stuck to organix/heinz pure range then the sickness wasnt as great. also avoided all gluten and egg jars till 1yr.

Doubtful that it is reflux if it has only just started, perhaps a slight intolerance ot an ingredient. Milk would come back far more readily as it is less dense than solids. Is he having milk at meal times too - if so perhaps he just doesn't know when he is full yet? Also is he moving around more which could cause his tummy to be less settled if he does have any weakness of the tummy valve still. If you can, sit him upright and keep him still for his food to go down and stay down but if he is a wriggler may be easier said than done !

dd2 was also sick on breats and formula milk. she was dx with relux earlier this year. has calmed down a bit now, but can still be sicky. she is now 2.

DD2 has reflux. She threw up all of her milk feeds, and we were advised to wean her at 5 months to improve this. From what I've been told (although may not be true) reflux actually improves with weaning because food is heavier than milk and therefore tends to stay down (apparently reflux is something to do with the muscle at the top of the stomach not shutting properly). We have been prescribed something called Instant Carobel which thickens up milk to stop it coming up again. Did she have this problem with milk? If not, I would have thought it unlikely to be reflux.

Hi nappybrain...can't offer any useful suggestions but from my experience it doesn't sound like reflux. My DS had reflux from the start and used to bring up loads of milk. It is a mechanical problem due to the muscle at the top of the stomach not being developed enough to close properly and hold the food in. Things improved when he went onto solids as they are more likely to stay in the stomach than liquid which is more likely to swish back out again. If he's not too hungry(ie fine with just milk at the moment) then I'd go with HM and say wait a while and try again. If the problem persists then I would take him to the Dr.

Good luck. xxx

Thanks for all your suggestions - I thought it was strange that his formula stayed down as I had thought reflux would bring that up too - and he is fine with all his bottles. So it does sound like it perhaps isn't that. He is always fine at breakfast and he is having either Hipp/Baby Organix jars for 4mth olds - it could be an intolerance I guess although it happens with savoury and fruit puddings. I know 5mths is young but he is and always has been a hungry baby and had to be weaned as he needed bottles every hour and a half!!! Hopefully it will get better in time and I will make a GP appt just to be sure - but he is thriving in all other respects. The washing that it creates is horrendous though! Thanks for your thoughts it's appreciated

5 months is still quite early to wean onto solids - poss add some bay rice to the milk for a month or so and start again - then stick to really basic foods like baby rice, pear, carrot, sqaush etc - the digestion is not developed properly until 6 months - slowly does it is the key. Add one new food every 3 days.
