I ate loads of broccoli and my 13 month old dd loves it, infact thats all I could get her to eat when weaning. My mum craved paella (sorry about spelling), adored the smell of tarmac and creosote, said she would have happily licked it off the fence if my dad would have let her and also watched the original Star Trek. I also love all these things, hope dd is not as obsessed with Buffy the Vampire Slayer as I was addicted when on mat leave and could not miss an episode.

RubySlippers · 12/11/2007 13:25

i used to watch "deal or no deal" whilst on maternity leave
i had a certain fondness for Noel and his ridiculously flowery shirts by the end of my 6 months off ...

With my first I had to have tomatoes on toast every day with black pepper and olive oil and my son loves tomatoes.

Pickie · 12/11/2007 13:43

satsumas by the net with both DC and DD mayonaise sandwiches with cheese and cucumber. She eats mayo like it is yoghurt plus loves cheese and cucumber. Both kids are on ration with fruit as they would eat it all day long. DSs poo smelt of cider last year after pigging out on apples

NAB3littlemonkeys · 12/11/2007 13:54

I think it is because they get used to the tastes of things we eat and remember them and enjoy them when weaned.

RubySlippers · 12/11/2007 16:18

ROFL at poo smelling of cider
slightly off topic, but my cousin's hads turned orange as he used to eat satsumas by the bag full!

I craved raw broccoli - my ds has never tried it raw, but loves broccoli, also other similar veg, e.g. cabbage and sprouts (he got really excited a couple of weeks ago when we had the first sprouts of the season!)

My mum craved cherries, and both my twin sister and I love them.

aleciawalton · 12/11/2007 20:08

i do think there is some link but not a full proof one.

my ds one hates meat ( i am vegaterian - cant spell) and when prego couldnt even stand the smell. i ate 5 oranges a day, so can he. milk and chocolate at the end of my prego, he just loves both. but i did crave peanut butter ( yes i know i shouldnt have but i did limit it) and he hates it.

i also think there is some link with breast feeding. my ds will eat fresh spinish salads (20 months now) and i ate them a lot while bf to up my iron.

im now prego and crave meat some times and milk and candy, chocolate. i hope for my dh sake that this one will eat meat as he is a big meat eater.

I craved milky things during my first pregnancy and DS1 is mad on milk. He won't go to bed without a very large cup of hot milk and has always been like this.

LyraSilvertongue · 13/11/2007 00:11

Having said that, both DSs adore tomatoes and I've never really liked them that much.
DP, on the other hand, would have tomatoes in every meal if he could, as would his sister, who used to choose tomatoes over sweets when she was a little girl.
So maybe there's a bit of genetics in there too.

colditz · 13/11/2007 00:12

I'm not sure

I CRAVED cheese with ds1 - his favourite food.

but I was revolted by broccoli with ds2 - he loves it.

Odd. Probably entirely unlinked.

shrooms · 13/11/2007 00:49

Blueberries were a fave for me and both kiddies love them, especially in muffin form...

Also rice anything - rice cakes, rice pilaf, boiled, pudding ect ect!

Joash · 13/11/2007 01:10

Nah - i used to go mad for jelly cubes with worcester sauce on.

morningglory · 13/11/2007 06:48

I craved watermelon, ate loads of salmon sashimi, and drank lots of carrot juice whilst pregnant. DS loves watermelon, salmon sashimi, and raw carrots.

OTOH, I don't like sausages and avoided blue cheeses, salamis, and pate when pregnant. DS loves sausages, gorgonzola cheese, and pates.

RubySlippers · 13/11/2007 08:05

jelly cubes with worcester sauce
that is the most unusual one so far - think it may have the edge on carrot sticks dipped in haagen daz

most cravings seems to be for "regular" foods ...

I craved chickpeas like mad and DS loves them, and I really went off cous cous and avocado, DS cant stand either and he eats almost anything!!

gladders · 13/11/2007 11:31

Just like another poster - my Mum ate at least a packet (sometimes 2 she has admitted) of licorice allsorts every day while pregnant...

First tried the stuff aged 6 (imprinted firmly on my memory) and I gagged.... hate the stuff!

procrastinatingparent · 13/11/2007 12:01

That filthy black liquorice stuff for me too. My mother ate it continually with me, and I can't stand it.

My main problem is that anything I ate while I had morning sickness (which I had any moment I wasn't actually chewing food in my mouth) forever after makes me feel sick. So bye bye tortelloni, basil, jambalaya and various other favourites.

All DCs have different likes and dislikes and I can't spot any consistent themes in their tastes.

willow · 13/11/2007 12:21

The weirdest thing was that I went from hating Marmite to loving it whilst pregnant. Bit ambivalent now, tbh.

My mum loved vinagrette when she was pregnant - my siblings and I loved it as kids (my brother's lips would go white from eating so much vinegar); I craved it during pregnancy and DS loves it too, will eat it by the spoonful.

RubySlippers · 13/11/2007 12:50

sharp or strong flavours seem to be a theme
marmite, liquorice, vinegar, worcester sauce ...

or foods you didn't like before PG

When I was pregnant with dd1 I ate loads of broccoli and she loves it. I also ate lots of oranges and she doesn't like them at all.

With dd2 I ate snickers bars and she loves peanuts and chocolate. I ate a lot of plums as well and she loves plums.

My mum drank bitter lemon while she was pregnant with me and I hate the stuff, I only discovered this when my uncle told me while I was pregnant with dd2.
With my brother she ate polo mints and he hates them.
