How much does your 18 month old eat?

because I can't believe how much my DD eats and I have no-one to compare her to to see if its normal!

For example today: breakfast 1.5 weetabix with milk followed by a banana.

Lunch: 2 sausages (adult large thick pork and apple ones) 2 table spoons of sweet pot mash, half a carrot and a table spoon of sweetcorn. Followed by an adult sized yoghurt.

Tea:Pasta with tomato sauce. (quite a large portion. probably about 30 pieces of penne pasta.

At bedtime she'll have about 7 oz milk

I know people normally worry that their DCs don't eat enough but I'm worried that I'm overfeeding her. (As a slightly overweight mother)

She completely self-feeds so I'm not physically shovelling the food down her?

What are other 18 month olds eating?

17 mo DS:

Breakfast: HUGE adult portion of porridge - more than I would eat! 6 oz of milk.

Mid-morning: Fruit (e.g. 12 stawberries, 15 grapes, banana) and a Toddler cereal bar

Lunch: Left overs from our dinner, I would say 1/3 of adult portion. Followed by portion of fruit.

Mid-afternoon: Fruit pouch/biscuits/fruit

Tea: omlette - 1 egg, tomatoes/ cheese on toast 1 slice etc etc. Adult sized yoghurt.

Before bed: Rusk and approx 8-10 oz milk

I would say he eats more than his peers. Is tall for his age as well. But I just use his appetite as a guide. I offer food and if he eats it fine, if not I remove, no fuss. Also, if he is hungry (goes to highchair or bag when out!) I only offer healthy food, normally fruit.

haha- your dd is eating nothing compared to mine!!

she is nearly 19m and this is what she's had so far today.....

Breakfast: bowl of cereal with milk, banana, glass of orange juice.

Mid-morning snack: box of rasins

Lunch: cheese and tomato sandwich, half a bag of organix carrot crisp sticks, 3 sticks of mild cheddar cheese, and half an apple.

afternoon snack: 3 organix apple rice cakes.

tea: large bowl full of spaghetti bolognase and a slice of garlic bread....

and she will probs have a slice of toast or some grapes before bed!!!

and that is about a normal day for us!!! she eats just as much if not more than her nearly 3yo brother, she is actually underweight for her height and age anyway so i'm not worried one bit!!!

Elfsmummy · 07/11/2007 18:09

Thanks for that - sounds pretty similar!
She doesn't really get any food between meals unless we're out of running late or whatever and like you she has the odd day where she doesn't eat much and it just gets taken away.

So I'll stop fretting - she's only on the 50th centile so she must just burn it off - lucky girl!

yep- wouldn't it be great if we could burn off so much food by just sitting and playing, napping and walking round the house??!!??

LadyOfWaffle · 07/11/2007 18:15

He used to eat loads, but recently has started eat very little - he would eat adult portions for dinner.

dd666 · 07/11/2007 18:16

just read those and am now\ worrying that my 18mo dd doesnt eat all that much thought she ate a lot untill just

glaskham · 07/11/2007 18:20

saying that my son picks at food and probably only eats half as much as my dd and he is nearly 3!! she has a much better appitite than him, though we used to give him adult size portions to eat for tea and it would be cleared, but since hitting 2yo he has learnt how to just eat when hungry....

my dd has her days where she picks at bits....but more often than not clears her plate!!! sure she'll calm down soon though!!! if not then i just wish i had the same motabolism as her!!!- she obv gets it from her daddy!!! haha!!

My two (6 and 8) have always eaten lots and are very slim - they eat when they are hungry, have regular nutritious meals and snacks, and are very active and healthy - just like your lo seems to be. As long as she is eating out of hunger and is having enough to drink I think you don't need to worry at all. She will probo slow down alot at 2-3 years. They will stop growing so ridiculously fast and so burn off less.

sarahtwobratz · 08/11/2007 02:00

DD1 (6 1/2) DD2 (2) both eat absolutely nothing. Winds me up constantly, but both seem to grow

StrawberryMartini · 08/11/2007 07:27

I have the opposite worry. In a day ds (18mo) will eat:

On waking: 6oz Neocate (special formula)

Breakfast: 1/2 piece toast, sometimes only a few bites. Won't touch anything from a spoon.

Snack: Organix (the only thing he does eat) or apple pieces (spits out).

Lunch: Few bites of bread, ham (devours it but I try to limit due to salt) or chicken, 1 slice cucumber (usually spits out).

Snack: Organix / oat cakes / bread sticks (keep trying fruit but he spits it out)

Tea: Fishfingers (2), the only carbs I can get him to eat is chips, of which he will eat 2 or 3), 1 sprig broccoli.

Doesn't do puddings of any kind.

Bed: 8oz Neocate

I've no idea how he survives but he looks just fine.

I think we all worry for different reasons and as long as their weight isn't too extreme one way or the other then we should chill out a bit!

Strawberry martini - Im the same as you, my ds is 15 months and barely eats compared to what has been put on here, but again he seems ok and doesnt cry when hes hungry, (which everyone insists kids do), im sure if I didnt feed him at all, he'd not bother with food all day!

He worries me with how little he eats, but what can you do?

xx

You've made me feel so much better! My 18 mnth old ds barely eats at all and if weren't for hummus, avocado and tomatoes he'd starve. He's currently eating fish fingers and potato waffles too but won't entertain anything else...cheese, chicken, pasta, anything in a tomato sauce, he just turns his head to the side and keeps his lips jammed shut!
