Ideas for a "cat" birthday cake

Complete novice baker here - but I'd like to make a cake for DD who is about to turn one.

She really likes cats at the moment (well you know what I mean), so I thought I'd do a round cake and cut it to the shape of a cat's face then decorate somehow with eyes, whiskers (maybe use chocolate Matchstick things), etc. Does that sound feasible? Any suggestions to make it easy and look fabulous??

Also hoping to make some fairy cakes, but I may be getting a bit ambitious now...

easy peasy

make two round cakes (or one round and one square if you only have one round tin)
use the round one as it is and add ears cut from the other - this kind of thing

ice with chocolate buttercream (50g butter, 75g icing sugar, 25g drinking choc beaten together, bit of milk to make it spreadable) roughed up with a fork to look like fur

make face with sweets as in pic, or matchmakers as you suggest

fairy cakes are dead easy - use the same Victoria sponge mix as for the big cake

Was going to suggest the same sort of thing as MrsB. It is much easier to add to a cake than cut away. IYSWIM.

Don't forget that you should enjoy your LO birthday too so don't get stressed. If everything goes wrong you can alwasy nip out and buy a round cake and a square cake and start again.

Just have fun it is the most important part of baking, make sure you enjoy it. The Cake will turn out fine....They always do!

Great - thanks for the tips (good point about being easier to add than remove cake) and picture is helpful reference too.

Will try not to stress. Surely this is all part of the fun and if it all goes horribly wrong I will have something to look back and laugh at! Hope I still feel this way at midnight when I am trying to make it...

Think I might buy a packet of Smarties to be eyes, and I can eat the rest!

there is one in here

it looks easy to make - just the cat's face with a bow.

Daff,

You'll be fine, sometimes things can go wrong but they always work out for the ebst in the end!

I remember once, long time ago I was making an elephant cake, went completly wrong!!! Ended up being an effil(Sp) tower cake. With no refernce to the person the cake was for.

Everyone thought I was a complet genius ans her DH present to her that night was a trip to PAris! So just go with the flow and have fun.

Thanks for those. I've been and bought a variety of sweets to make eyes etc, so will give it a go at the weekend I think. Will try to post of photo of the results!
