If I feed them tofu to eat tomorrow that went out of date today - and that I forgot I'd got until after I'd cooked something else?

I have Ofsted this week (arghh) so am not allowed to be ill!!!!

If the water it is in smells sour then it is off but other wise it should be fine.

janeite · 05/11/2007 19:56

Thanks. It's the marinated stuff so not in water. What do you think? Best not risk it?

I think it will be fine tbh, taste it and you will know.

I've eaten slightly out of date marinated tofu before and it was fine. I wouldn't leave it for too many days though, just in case.

It'll be fine. Not much can grow on it in a few days as it is salty when marinaded, and even the plain, fresh stuff will be fine for a few days after exp date. They always err on the side of caution on food labels.

Hanging my head in shame I can confess that I've often cut off the edges of left-over pieces of unmarinated tofu when they've looked a bit iffy but still used the rest as long as it smells OK - and no-one's ever been ill because of it, to my knowledge. Always do the same with cheese whose outside has gone mouldy too, & no problems with that either. I would agree with general rule that if something smells OK then it's fit to eat & if not, then it needs to be thrown out. If it's cooked properly you'll kill off any bugs anyway...

Thankyou - just about to cook it!
