You can get salt reduced stocks in Holland and Barrett (Kello and Swiss Marigold), but I could never find any salt-free ones and so I ended up making my own. I'm vegetarian, so my recipe is for vegetable stock, but if you have some chicken bones and scraps, throw it in with the veg.

Chop 1 onion, 3 carrots, 3 sticks of celery, half a leek, half a red pepper and half a courgette. Fry in 2 teaspoons of olive oil for 5 minutes until softened, don't let it brown. Add 1.5 litres of cold water and a small bunch of fresh herbs/couple of teaspoons dried herbs. Bring to the boil, and simmer (uncovered) for 30 minutes until reduced slightly. Cool, strain then freeze.

Kallo is very low in salt.

I've found low salt vegetable stock but not chicken stock. If that helps I'll get off my arse and go and look in cupboard to find the brand

Munchkinola · 27/10/2004 20:22

No Need It's Kallo

HI Mumofelise

I emailed Annabel Karmel using her website about this. Apparently Sainsburys used to make it but have discontinued it. As others have said, the only ready made stuff is reduced salt rather than salt free unfortunately.

I e-mailed Cow & Gate to see if they would consider making some a while ago, but no reply ... guess not then!! They used to make a baby gravy (don't know if they still do) and with DD1 I used to use that instead of stock.

I make my own using chicken bones, celery, onions and carrots. Boil up for an hour and then freeze in usable portions. Easy peasy .
