I wouldn't advocate using on kids but ....

This reminds me that when we go to Mil's house we have to go through her cupboards and chuck rancid stuff out - she doesn't ever look at use by dates (not sure she knows what they're for)

If the food is good, yes.

Use by/ best before dates are great in theory but i think in practice have de-skilled consumers in using the senses they were born with to decide whether food is good or not. I remember once a piece of meat being stinking bad and my xp insisting it was OK because it was 2 days before the best before date! And another time he proposed to throw out perfectly good cheese because it was after the bb date - talk about helpless!

like others have said, it depends, with fresh things I can judge if they're still edible, cans and the like, I might throw them away just in case.
