*****Reflect for a moment on the horrific irony of feeding our own dear children chocolate treats made with cocoa produced by child slaves*****

I know its been said before on here, but it really struck me today, how dreadful it is. I was thinking specifically about buying chocolates for my kids Christmas stockings...

Stop Traffik is a site which has lots of information and lists of all the fairtrade chocolate brands - there are so many, there really is no excuse.

And here is a link to Ethical Super Store, which sells so many varieties of Divine fairtrade chocolate.

We are all keen to help other MNers out at Christmas (which I think is wonderful), but heres another thing we can do to take care of others this Christmas. Choose to buy fairtrade only. Place a big order and stock up...you know you want to!

Please keep this bumped.

Astrophe.

Good Lord, I hadn't noticed! (hides in shame) I presumed that they all were as the Mayagold was - and the dcs aren't so keen on that have been buying it less and the dark more.

Will try Divine from now on. Also I think Montezuma's may be too, made in Brighton (by a couple who gave up top city type jobs to follow dream of good chocolate!) I will go and check

alyblackcat · 26/10/2007 23:10

Montezuma's trade policy

Do you think they will send me free chocolate now?

totallyfreaky · 26/10/2007 23:10

So, would a supermarkets equivelent of most things be ok?

Astrophe · 26/10/2007 23:10

aly, I was fooled by the MayaGold being FT as well - I think thats the whole idea

G&B were recently bought by Cadbury.

Have a look at this, its really interesting www.ethiscore.org/product.aspx?id=247446&free=true

Aly, have a look at Ethicalsuperstore in the OP - they have SO many types of FT chocolate, even some kids products.

alyblackcat · 26/10/2007 23:13

Yes G&B started in Hastings, I knew they had been sold but didn't know who to.

Astrophe · 26/10/2007 23:13

I only know of Co-op fairtrade products totally

EmsMum · 26/10/2007 23:23

Thanks for the timely reminder.

alyblackcat · 26/10/2007 23:25

Astrophe, I'd clicked on the link and only got the Stop Traffik site. Googled it and it looks great, has quite a few Montezuma's bits on it too.

Playing Devil's Avacado here (and I only had a skim read, will be going back for a better check) but, the stop traffic was mainly talking about buying products that persons involved/affected by people traffiking. Whereas Fair Trade usually also involves the producer getting a fair price (in turn - hopefully)paying/looking after workers?

Astrophe · 26/10/2007 23:31

I think Fair tRADE IS BOTh - You couldn't get a Fair Trade certification if you used child slaves. Its also about providing a fair price and reasonable living standard for workers though, as you said.

Thought provoking stuff as I deal with my insomnia.

I'm under the impression that Hotel Chocolat stuff is OK - does anyone know otherwise?

Another bump.

The trouble is, Nestle are so difficult to boycot. Not that that should be an excuse... they just make everything.
