Gagging reflex - advice please

My ds is 19 wks and i have been slowly introducing solids for the last week or so. Things were fine for a couple of days, then he started being sick after solids, first just a little and now the whole lot, plus whatever milk he had before this, he seems to gag then the lot comes flooding out everywhere, gave me a right fright (and him). I have heard that you should not introduce solids until gagging reflex has gone? Should I stop the solids and wait awhile or persevere? Please help!!!

Girly- I would suggest leaving it for a week or so, then trying again. You say "sick after solids"- do you mean that he takes a quantity, then it comes back in one go, or that he gags on each spoonful?

What are you giving him? My dd used to throw up her savoury stuff much more regularly than the sweet stuff (still does!). Could you try tiny quantities of something like apple and pear puree, which is really smooth, and quite sweet? Another good one is Hipp peaches with honey- if he won't eat it you can finish the jar yourself

Hi Girly

my dd used to gag on bits for ages - it was a real nightmare - but are you feeding just the smooth stuff? My friend's ds used to gag on smooth stuff and they found out that he had swollen tonsils (at about 8motnhs)- I think he was given antibitoics and they put him on a course of homeopathy and now he can eat everything(coming up to 12 months)

Update, ds only has smooth stuff ie apple, carrot, baby rice etc. I am now giving the solids first, then the milk and this seems to be working, so much so that he refuses the milk at thse times until he has had the solids, he catches on quick, if he sees the bowl of food then he only wants that to start, and then happily drinks most of the milk afterwards, not too worried about not having enough milk as he still has about 6-7oz either straight or mixed with his food, he is also a BIG boy, at 20 wks he weighs about 18/19 pounds!!

Should he start dropping feeds now, hus 10pm is down to around 3-4oz, he is sort of following a GF routine, when it comes to feeding, not sleeping tho he drops off when he wants and for how long he wants, but as he sleeps through most nights I don't mind this.

Cor, gone on a bit have'nt I?
