I’ve bought some piklets in a fit of pique but I don’t know what to do with them.

They look lovely but I don’t know if to treat them as scones or pancake?

(I’m from the south so please excuse my ignorance)

Part Kiwi :) Definite staple there!

You can just eat them as they are with butter & jam if you want.

But toasted with butter is giid, freshly made us better!

@Plussizejumpsuit

Picklets are from a certain part of the North. Not all northerners are the same. They're not a Newcastle thing. Sorry I'm just sick of all this covid stuff re 'the North' as if it's all th same. I know this isn't what you asked! Toast them really well and put loads of butter. Plus tea. Ideally on a rainy day. Enjoy!
See my pp. I'd associate them with the north midlands, but there are regional variations.

Staffordshire oat cakes are even better.

Rae36 · 23/10/2020 21:51

Never heard of them. I assumed they were mini fish, like anchovies of something. I'm going to look out for them next tine in shopping

PatriciaHolm · 23/10/2020 21:51

Baby crumpets!!

Well toasted, with butter and marmite.

MikeUniformMike · 23/10/2020 21:52

And the north midlands are not in the north.
The welsh ones are more like little pancakes, and not to be confused with pice'r maen, which are vile.
The welsh cakes that you buy in shops are not authentic they seem to be a lot more scone-like.

wheresmymojo · 23/10/2020 21:53

@Russell19

I eat them cold with butter, or toast them with butter. I am from Stoke where pikelets originate Smile

Waves to fellow Stokie.

Yes, toasted with butter.

Todaywewilldobetter · 23/10/2020 21:53

Toast and eat with butter and honey!

RedRosie · 23/10/2020 21:53

@nocoolnamesleft Staffordshire oatcakes! I live in London and I miss them so much!

wheresmymojo · 23/10/2020 21:54

But yes, Staffordshire oatcakes are better.

My DM is visiting me in Hampshire next week and I've put in an order for two dozen Grin

MikeUniformMike · 23/10/2020 21:54

My intensive research quick google tells me that NZ pikelets are pancakes.

AdaColeman · 23/10/2020 21:55

Lashings of butter and top with a fried egg.

Or use as a base for Eggs Benedict or Omelette Arnold Bennett.

MikeUniformMike · 23/10/2020 21:55

They are much better warm.

MikeUniformMike · 23/10/2020 21:57

Derbyshire oatcakes and pikelets aren't quite the same as the Staffs ones. Still good though.

AsGhoulAsKimDeal · 23/10/2020 21:57

Toast and freight with an artery-challenging volume of butter.

Blueandwhiteteapot · 23/10/2020 21:59

Pique-lets?

RishiMcRichface · 23/10/2020 21:59

This thread title is so MNetty.

MikeUniformMike · 23/10/2020 22:18

I think you are being a bit pique-y there.

StanfordPines · 24/10/2020 07:56

As for the whole north/south thing I mentioned being from the south as the only time I have ever heard of them before is when I lived in Yorkshire and was trying to buy crumpets.
I never saw them when living in Manchester but I did get very confused by the bread roll options there. I don’t think there was space for any other carb based regional variations.

DH claims that in his family those from slightly further north than him, like Stoke, call crumpets piklets. They are just the same thing but with a different name.

My mum calls all crumpets pikelets. I assumed it was just a regional name for crumpets. She's from "the North" Grin

We buy Staffordshire oatcakes regularly in Sainsburys in Hampshire.

Pikelets - agree, treat as crumpets. Toast, butter, marmite, soft cheese, ham, any savoury topping really.

EerilyDeleted · 24/10/2020 08:05

My grandma called crumpets pikelets too, she was from West Yorkshire.

MikeUniformMike · 24/10/2020 13:26

But in Yorkshire they call a bread roll a tea cake.

SoPanny · 24/10/2020 13:30

For me, the oukelet can only be summed up as a “disappointing crumpet”.

They’re rare up here in Scotland but whenever I’ve gone there they are pants.

SoPanny · 24/10/2020 13:30

*pikelet even

Ffs

MikeUniformMike · 24/10/2020 13:31

Pikelets are much better than crumpets.
