Beans, beans, beans!

I thought I would make chilli for dinner - have just searched my food cupboard and I have:

baked beans: two kinds (Heinz and Weightwatchers)
flageolet beans
cannellini beans
chickpeas (lots and lots of chickpeas - must have been thinking I would make a lot of houmous)
butter beans
black eye beans
haricot beans (organic)

In my freezer I also have broad beans.

But no kidney beans.

I have too many kinds of beans. But not the kind I want. What does this say about me?

You are a vegetarian

dogwalker · 19/10/2004 16:27

and possibly very windy

motherinferior · 19/10/2004 16:27

You used to be a wholefoody vegetarian. How many tins of tomatoes do you have?

You could do sums with them, thus Demystifying Maths?

bundle · 19/10/2004 16:27

i personally don't think the type of beans matters, they all taste of v little, it's the sauce that matters

snmum · 19/10/2004 16:29

you have a bean fetish dont you?

i bet mrmarthamoo has to be smothered in them

motherinferior · 19/10/2004 16:29

Bundle !

bundle · 19/10/2004 16:29

sorry, am i being bean-ignorant?

motherinferior · 19/10/2004 16:32

Oh, they do taste different. Chickpeas are the best and most flavoursome if you ask me. I will concede that butter beans and cannellini beans and haricot beans can be a bit interchangeable although the proper dried ones or organic tinned ARE different, they ARE, they ARE. Black eye beans v yummy.

Try black eye beans, MM.

I used to be a wholefoody vegetarian in case you hadn't guessed.

marthamoo · 19/10/2004 16:33

Not a vegetarian! Quite windy sometimes though! No bean fetish (at least I didn't think so...perhaps I am in denial...?)

I have about 9 tins of tomatoes too....

I could put some other beans in I think but dh would say "these are not the right beans!". I'm a bean fetishist and he's anal, what a couple!

Fun with beans! That's what I'll use them for, mi!

submit to chick peas, they are different and home made hummus v yummy. do like those whopping ones, are they butter beans? specially with drizzle olive oil and smattering of garlic..but as i say it's all in the flavours you add

snmum · 19/10/2004 16:36

LOL!

i think any beans DO taste ok in chilli actually, i have used baked beans before and they are ok but dont put them in too early else they disolve (with my cooking anyway!)

iota · 19/10/2004 16:38

we sometimes make chilli with tins of mixed beans - it really doesn't have to be kidney beans, I would use any of them except chickpeas or butter beans in a chilli

motherinferior · 19/10/2004 16:40

Put in haricots or blackeyes and don't call it chilli. Tell you what, put in blackeyes and call it Black Eyed Peas and add a bit of cumin and hint it's from the Deep South.

Pidge · 19/10/2004 16:42

Yum, definitely most of those beans would work in a chilli. Wash the sauce off the baked beans before using them though! Otherwise, I would use the cannellini beans.

Am a bit of a fan of the pinto myself - you could add that to your collection!

bundle · 19/10/2004 16:43

pinto - are they like cannellini?

marthamoo · 19/10/2004 16:44

I think I will - can't be arsed thinking of anything else to have now. S'pose I ought to go and defrost some mince....

Yes, I'll think of another name for it...racking my brains for that Carpenters song now...billygumbo, what's that? (fish stew?) jambalaya, cajun somethings.....

Moo's Deep South blackeyed bean gumbo chili stew?

OP posts:
Pidge · 19/10/2004 16:55

bundle - they're darker, and I think they've got a bit more flavour - they're the ones you tend to get in Mexican food, so stand up well to spices, chilli etc.

motherinferior · 19/10/2004 18:51

And if he queries, explain nicely that it really ought to have dried alligator in it for authenticity and you can get that next time if he wants

hunkermunker · 19/10/2004 20:48

I have the same kind of bean-related problem Marthamoo! Why don't I ever buy kidney beans? What kind of moron am I?! Gah!

marthamoo · 19/10/2004 21:23

Chilli works very well with black eye beans !

Have put kidney beans on my shopping list though - suggest you do the same hunkermunker!

Tinker · 19/10/2004 21:25

marthamoo · 19/10/2004 21:27
