Broccoli - how can I tell when it's just about to turn yellow? I'm fed up with wasting my money!

Obviously if it was yellow in the shop I wouldn't buy it. It has a strange habit of going yellow while my back is turned. I always keep it wrapped, in the fridge so it can't be the way I'm storing it ... Can you tell by looking at the tiny buds?

Buy it when it's really hard, dark green and the buds are purplish. If the stem is bendy or if it's all a medium green colour, it will go yellow within a couple of days.

I keep mine unwrapped in the salad/veg drawer in the fridge and always try to use it within 2/3 days anyway.

unwrap it

chop it up blanch it freeze it - it won't go yellow then!

I always buy frozen now. It keeps its vitamins and doesn't go yucky in the fridge.

Thanks everyone. I like the tip about looking for purplish buds, I'd never thought of that but actually it does go a bit greyish and dull looking when it's not quite so fresh. Also, I've discovered that you can still use the stalks when the tops have gone yellow, they are usually quite crisp and have a good flavour.
