I'm not sure this is the right topic because it's a wine question but wasn't sure where else to put it

I'm looking at buying my Dad and step mother some wine for christmas(I know, but I like to be prepared) it's to go with some other bits and bobs in a home made hamper.

What i'm looking for is some nice/not too expensive/kinda snobby, red and white wine. looking for a bottle of each(step mother is the kinda snobby one, think Mrs Bucket from Keeping Up Appearances, but not quite that bad)

Can anyone recommend anything to a very unknowledgeable wine lady?

TIA

For the white wine - Sancerre or Chablis are both delicious and not the cheapest on the rack but by no means the most expensive. As for red, a nice Merlot would be good or a Rioja. But if your stepmum is a bit snobby she may prefer French, in which case I would go for a nice Burgundy like Cotes- de-Beaunes Villages which again is not the cheapest but is not the most expensive either. The Waitrose website has good info about each bottle in their wine section.
You could always buy a few bottles to try

We're into Chilean Syrah at the moment. Try Waitrose. Not too expensive, typically about £8 a bottle.

Don't really drink white, but Pinot Grigio seems to go down well with most people.

It's all about personal taste isn't it. At the moment i adore New Zealand whites and Chilean whites & reds. (unfortunately these don't tend to eb the cheapest bottles on the shelves!)

Viognier is a lovely unusual (French)white and a Barolo or Amarone (both reds-Italian)are good spicy full bodied for Christmas.

Thanks

I guess it is personal taste, actually they are due round for diner in a couple of weeks. They'll probably bring wine with them, guess I can just buy whatever they bring as they will like that Thing is i'm sure it'll be from M&S, everything is as Dad works there and gets a discount(snobby but it ALL comes from M&S) All xmas presents and food came from M&S last year, so I don't want to buy from there for them IYSWIM

We are having a bit of a NZ wine phase at the moment:
Villa Maria - Sauvignon Blanc, (about £8.99 from Waitrose, Tesco, Sainsbury etc). Wither Hills NZ sauvignon blanc is also good and about the same price. Villa Maria also do a good pinot Noir (I think 2004 or 2005) for about £10. Saint Clair Marlborough Pinot Noir is also good and about £10.
