Is it one of those 'in advance' things??

Yes. I would do it mid november as it is great a month or so in advance. Cover tightly it after initial steaming and leave till christmas when it'll need a few hours.

That's great - thank you. Is it the cake we can do now??

I'd do the cake as soon as poss so that you can 'feed' it with brandy ~(once a week) as many times as you can! [glug glug]
I did my one last week...

Do you have to feed your xmas cake?

Well I don't think it's obligatory, but it does make it very moist and boozy!
If you don't want to give your kids alcohol then you can feed it with a nice vanilla infusion like syrup. Although this would be too sickly if you used lots of sugar and dried fruit in the cake.

I'd go with a watered down syrup.
Failing that, of course, just bake the cake a week or so in advance and it'll still be moist and delicious!
