Onion Marmalade/Relish

Hi, someone gave me a recipe for onion marmalade which i had at her house and it was gorgeous. However I tried it 2 days ago and mine has set solid! Not sure what I did wrong, suspect over cooking. Anyone got a good recipe?

just lots of red onions with some balsamic vinegar and sugar and stew for a while in a saucepan - make this for DP wen we have roast beef and always goes down well when have other people over for Sunday lunch - can add chilli too for a change (normally I just add the dried flakes of chilli) HTH
