this is the best cottage/sherperds pie - by Gordon Ramsey

whoops · 25/09/2007 14:45

I usually put diced swede & carrot in my cottage pie

yaddayah · 25/09/2007 14:46

mmm yep .. its luverly .. my mum used to add curry powder as well (but it makes the mash go a bit orange

(possibly a bit to 70's retro )

SleeplessInTheStaceym11House · 25/09/2007 14:47

red wine, what about dc's (age nearly 3 and nearly 1)?

yaddayah · 25/09/2007 14:48

alcohol gets cooked off so you just get the flavour irrc

oliveoil · 25/09/2007 14:49

well I served it to mine, aged 4 and 2

they didn't eat it but that had nothing to do with the alcohol...

tasja · 25/09/2007 14:51

I add mixed veg to mine

EmsMum · 25/09/2007 14:53

finely (must be finely) diced carrot, celery and onion. And garlic. tinned toms. whatever herbs you want.

red wine is better put in the cook than the pie imo, unless its a dinner party standard one. wasted on the kids.

wouldn't brocolli be better with it rather than in it? I wouldn't be able to judge if it would come out tough or soggy.

ledodgy · 25/09/2007 14:57

Brush a bit of egg on top of the potato if you're not using cheese it makes it lovely and crispy and tasty.

SleeplessInTheStaceym11House · 25/09/2007 15:13

ledodgy good idea but no eggs, darn might dash downstairs later and see if neighbor has any!

will do gordon ramsey i think without the red wine, jsut looked and no wine either, can you tell we're skint??

NannyL · 25/09/2007 18:56

oh and 3 cloves of garlic

SleeplessInTheStaceym11House · 25/09/2007 19:03

well i did:

onion fried
add grated carrot and parsnip and chopped celery and swede
added some garlic stuff
added mixed herbs
added beef stock and let it reduce
put in oven with mash on top!!

tasted brilliant, the swede and parsnip made it taste great!

nannyl id love half and half mash with sweet potato but dh wont eat sweet potato!
