My dd (5) absolutely loves (and always has love) chilli.. I've never before in my life made it and don't know where to start. But thinking that I should start liking it as,apparently, it's quite good for you.

Anyone got a good recipe?

Spookily enough I have just finished making some!

My recipe is so easy:

onion
steak mince
can of baked beans
can of chopped tomatoes
kidney beans
loads of garlic
tomato puree
chilli powder

Brown the onion and mince, add the rest of the ingredients and cook for about 45 mins.

lol, thanks - any chance of some quantities?

and baked beans, really?

Melt a few squares of Bourneville dark chocolate just at the end of cooking - it's sooooo good!

ledodgy · 24/09/2007 17:16

I make it the same way as Pigy but with dark chocolate added too. I also add green pepper and sometimes use tomato ketchup instead of puree or heinz meanz beanz sweet chilli flavour baked beans instead of bog standard ones. Tis nice with fresh chillis added too as well as the powder if you have any.

Serve with rice or baked potato along with grated cheese and sour cream.mmmmmmmmm

OK, so I'm still not really warming to the idea but can I have quantities please?? my 5YO will love you forever!!!

she's always nagging me to make it/moaning that I don't

I usually guess:

Pack of good quality steak mince - say 500g ish?
Couple of cans of chopped tomatoes (we like tomatoes here!)
Generous squirt of tom puree
One onion
Use Lazy garlic - comes in a jar - couple pf teaspoons = 2 cloves. Or squash 2 cloves.
One can of kidney beans (drained) - they go in last but must be cooked through.

Half a teaspoon chilli powder and taste - add more or less depending how you like it.

bobsmum · 24/09/2007 17:27

I also add a beef stockcube to the mince when browning.

ledodgy · 24/09/2007 17:27

Just bung it in. Fry an onion with a clove or two of garlic then add the mince until it goes brown then add everything else and simmer for at least 30 mins The longer you simmer the nicer it is.

ledodgy · 24/09/2007 17:27

Oh yeah I forgot about the stock cube, good call.

ChippyMinton · 24/09/2007 17:29

Cumin is the secret ingredient.

policywonk · 24/09/2007 17:30

I'm with bobsmum - add dark chocolate.

ledodgy · 24/09/2007 17:33

Try this chilli -really tasty and easy.
Heat oil in pan. add 1 tsp each of paprika and cumin and 1-2 tsp chilli to taste. sautee for about one min on low heat. add 1 finely chopped onion and sautee.then throw in a chopped red pepper and add 500g mince or beef steak cubes and brown.add 1 can tomatoes and the same amount of hot beef stock, a sprinkle of sugar for the tomatoes, tbsp tomato puree, 1/2 tsp oregano ,1/2-1 tsp corriander and salt and pepper. simmer for about 20 mins if using mince , add drained can kidney beans and simmer for another 20 mins or so. when cooked take off heat and leave it for about 10 mins or so before serving.you can add dark chocolate now if you like and let it melt- makes the sauce richer! if using beef cubes instead of mince i put it in a low oven for about 1/12 hours or so until the meat is really tender. Its even better if you make it the day before and reheat.

CountessDracula · 24/09/2007 18:33

what I do...

Fry for eg 500g mince (buffalo if you can get it!) and a couple of chopped onions and a couple of cloves of chopped garlic

In a cup mix up

1 very heaped tsp flour
1 oxo cube or similar
1 tsp hot chocolate powder
2 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp chili powder or half a tsp of hot chili powder (or more/less to taste of course)

Mix in with the onion/mince and fry for a couple of minutes, stirring.

Chuck in a can of chopped tomatoes and a can of kidney beans. Add other things eg mushrooms if you like. I usually cook for 40 mins to bring out flavour of spices and sometimes add another tin of toms and freeze half if so up the spcies a bit

wheelybug · 24/09/2007 18:34

I do:

1 onion
500g mince
tin toms
1 green pepper
1 tin kidney beans
tsp chilli powder
tsp cumin
tbsp oregano

fry onion and mince, add green peppers then toms and herbs and spices. simmer until liquid almost gone. Add kidney beans and simmer until beans are cooked.

ComeOVeneer · 24/09/2007 18:35

I add a couple of squares of dark chocolate and tinned sweetcorn.

Twiglett · 24/09/2007 18:36

mine's cracking and easy

brown mince (lamb or beef)
add 2 x tins kidney beans in chilli sauce (I like the waitrose or sainsbury's ones)... I do 2 tins cos beans are kids favourite bits
add tin chopped tomatoes
crush clove garlic
bit of chilli
about 2 tbsp cumin

simmer for 30 mins

munchkinmum · 24/09/2007 18:47

I also put a teaspoon of cinnamon in mine - yum.

MascaraOHara · 24/09/2007 20:31

Oh I'm so glad I had my dinner before I logged on - would have been starviung otherwise.. they sound quite nice actually AND I've got a few methods to try.

My little girl will be chuffed to bits.

Thank you very much.
