Help me to cope with three big men...

... with huge appetites .

Dinner tomorrow, I am uninspired. So bored of everything. I was thinking of doing lancashire hotpot, followed by egg custard tart - what do you think?

I think I need hearty and non-fussy food. Help me please!

boeuf bourguignon There's also a 'cheat's' version. Serve with a pile of mash.

JeremyVile · 19/09/2007 12:16

Yup - manfood = curry, lasagne, shepards pie, casseroles etc.

AdmiralLapinWaivesTheRules · 19/09/2007 12:16

Nah, sick of curry, have been doing loads.

One pot yes, that's why I was thinking hotpot.

Egg custard tart is GORGE, you are deranged.

Was thinking chilli but DH hates kidney beans - are they essential?

Maybe roast cod would be good...

DH and his rugger crew lurrrve sausage chilli casserole - a dozen sausages, cook them, fry some onions, chuck in a casserole dish with tinned tomatoes, baked beans, worcester sauce, an oxo cube and chilli powder.

Not sure on the egg custard tho' doesn't sound like real man food to me. I'd probably do an apple crumble given the season.

Squiffy · 19/09/2007 12:26

Actually talking of roast cod, why not (seriously) do cod & chips?

AdmiralLapinWaivesTheRules · 19/09/2007 12:28

That does sound good. Or maybe toad in the hole with onion gravy and mash?

LOL, DH loves egg custard but I take your point. I've been doing tonnes of crumbles and cobblers with the hundreds of apples my MIl's been giving me... how about a steamed pudding, too wintery?

treacle sponge = man pudding

indignatio · 19/09/2007 12:40

If you want to ponce with pastry - bakewell tart and custard

AdmiralLapinWaivesTheRules · 19/09/2007 12:48

no, can't be arsed with pastry - DH might, he's the patissiere in this house. Treacle sponge sounds like a winner.

Oh and thank you all - including you, COddy, sorry for being dismissive!

You could change things round and have lamb crumble (big man food, easy, one big bowl kind of dish) then have the egg thing if you really must like it, or treacle pudding sounds good too.

Lamb crumble (if like most people you haven't heard of it)

500g lamb mince
onion
tinned toms
tomato puree - about 2/3rds of a tube
tbsp tomato ketchup
lamb stock cube
rosemary (lots)
grated carrot
peas - optional

Fry mince and onion (can scoop off exces fat from mince if you want), then add everything else and simmer for 10 mins. Add to ovenproof dish and top with standard crumble topping with grated cheese and bit of rosemary instead of sugar. About 40 mins in the oven at roughly 160C is usually about right.
Serve with whatever veg you like. Broccoli and courgettes work well.
Can be made in advance and just thrown in oven at appropriate moment, and freezes well too.

Can you tell we like it here? All DC's friends have liked it so far too.

bangers and mash with onion gravy

Pud - I'd do a crumble with custard
