I usually fry some onions and bacon, boil some macoroni, make a cheesy white sauce (melt butter, add flour to form a paste gradually add milk, remove from heat, add grated cheese) and then combine the whole lot. SOmetimes I would then top with grated cheese and bake or grill but usually not!

Find a basic cheese sauce recipe, most books will have a roux sauce recipe, just add loads of cheese to taste. Whilst you'e doing that cook the pasta, then drain it and chuck the sauce on top. I usually put some ham and tomoatoes on the botton of an oven proof dish and them cgrate some more cheese on top and grill for 5 minites.

I do the same as McDreamy but you could also add a tin of tomatoes to onions and bacon.

Good luck

Cook pasta.
Make cheese sauce.
Mix together and brown under grill/in oven.
Serve with veg or garlic bread.

Hello Lady V o'C
I would make the cheese sauce by melting a chunk of butter in a pan, then stir in 2 large spoons of flour. Then add milk and maybe a bayleaf and keep stirring until it gets thick, add more milk if you want a bigger quantity. Then when it is thick add grated cheese. Then you can just pour it over the pasta.

However I have never made macaroni cheese. But I made cauliflower cheese last week with gruyere cheese and DH though I had bought it from marks and spencers. What a compliment

McDreamy · 17/09/2007 13:43

takes a while in the oven or yo could just stck it under the grill but yes that's it

If you have any laughing cow type cheese, add a handful of triangles of that to the sauce and whizz it all up with a handheld blender. I fry lardons first in a pan, when done, take them out and use that pan to do pasta in. Make cheese roux based sauce, add triangles, whizz, mix bacon with drained pasta(add a dash of olive oil to pasta as it drains to keep it separated and glossy) then add sauce and put in baking dish. Cover top with sliced tomato and more cheese -optional. Bake in hot oven for 10 mins or put under grill (keep watching). Serve with peas and baby carrots. All food groups covered!
