Does anyone know of a recipe I can use for 8mth old ds using rice for tea as a change from potatoe. Either something savoury using vegetables or sweet, ie rice pudding type thing. Am avoiding wheat and cows milk for a little while longer yet due to all dh's allergies. He loves baby rice and fruit still, but think maybe the fruit in the evening sometimes causes him to poo early morning. Veggies on their own doesn't fill him enough. Any ideas appreciated!!

Try this:

Spring Vegetable Risotto
1 small leek, peeled and finely chopped
1 small courgette, finely chopped
small handful of frozen peas
1 tsp olive oil
small kno unsalted butter
3oz risotto rice (could use normal)
12 fl oz veg or chicken stock
half tsp dried oregano
2 tbsp grated cheese

Steam leek & courgette for 5 - 8 min
heat oil and butter then stir in rice for a couple of min. until translucent
Add stock a bit at a time waiting for it to be absorbed before you add the next lot
Bring to boil and simmer for 20 min, stirring cont.
Add oregabo, cheese & veg, simmer & stir for a further 5 - 10 min until liquid absored and rice tender.

that supposedly makes 6 - 8 portions and is suitable for freezing. Hope this helps. You could vary the veg

Honestly - my cooking isn't that bad

thanks oooggs!! only just had chance to reply to this thread!! Sounds ideal, if I were to use ordinary rice, do you just add the water all at once?

I would just add all at once. Risotto rice is smaller and cooks quicker

my dds favourite at this age was Khichri, an Indian baby food. they use it for weaning.

It's easy to make. Cook basmati (or other) rice with red split lentils, onion and garlic, bit of ginger and cummin, for about 20 mins. Add chopped tomatoes (tinned or fresh). Puree. add yoghurt (soya? or leave out).

you can leave out any of the spices or onion or garlic if you need to. it was very popular with mine and with visiting babies and toddlers too.

rice pudding -
50g pudding rice
1 pint milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla essence
sugar (can't remember how much - maybe 1 tablespoon of caster I think)

put all of it in greased dish, put a few knobs of butter on top and cook in the oven for about 90 minutes (maybe more) on a low heat.
