I'm having a real problem with getting my dd to eat a main meal - she loves picking (bread, chips, cheese, fruit, etc....) but every dinner time is a battle at the moment.

Does anyone out there have any good ideas re. cooking tasty dinners and getting her to eat?

How about chipping vegetables, rather than mashing. She'll be able to pick the food up herself then.

Pasta, rice, cous-cous and things like peas and sweetcorn are good at that stage as they can be eaten by hand. Our kids all like this South African thing called Boboties which is baked mince beef with sultanas and almonds, the recipe is in "Sophie Grigson's meat course".
I think 18m is the age they start to be a bit more "challenging" about food, DS2 ate loads of toast at home and very little else (nursery claimed he ate ok there). If I were you i'd just give her what you and your DH have and wait for this to pass-it will, and she won't starve.

Just making Butter Bean Gratin for DS2 (18months) He has a spoon, I have a spoon and I shovel in whilst he's trying to fill his spoon. He's happy to "share" the feeding this way.
