should it be clear or cloudy?
does it matter?

Clear but it goes cloudy if it gets cold I think. And it doesn't matter.

thanks soupy, i bought a new one today and just noticed that it is cloudy, ddin't use it just in case

Is the olive oil shelf above the freezers by any chance? It is in a local store and they have a notice about this causing cloudiness.

It depends on whether or not it's filtered. My parents had a villa in tuscany with olive orchards and we would get freshly pressed olive oil every year. It was very very natural and totally unfiltered and came complete with cloudy look and drowned ants. It tasted delicious. I stored the bulk of it in the fridge to keep it from going rancid. That makes it go semi solid and very cloudy.
